I talked to them, (APMEX) and they said they would refund my $$ if indeed it is a fake. I have given them quite a bit of business in the past year or so, i don't think they would give me a hard time. There is a 5 day return policy, however if this coin indeed isn't genuine then they comitted fraud and I could probably pursue legal action if I wanted to. They could possibly imply that isn't the coin we sent you, however I am sure they must keep photos of coins they sell for a little while, especially the expensive ones. A photo would be like a fingerprint of a coin. Besides they are a well known company and I belive they will stand by their word. This coin was shipped on 8 May so it hasn't even been a month yet. I probably would accept store credit as i have received some nice coins from them. At least I purchased it from a well known company and not a cash transaction to a dealer at a coin show or flea market who I will never see again.
Update I talked to ANACS today, they slabbed this coin as genuine. (sigh of relief ). It came back as corroded, cleaned but genuine. I'll post a pic when it comes in. This may be a slabbed that never should be "cracked open" and re-submitted.
I told you so... Harry, thanks for posting, Im the one that told you it was real. yah, love it when I'm right, all the nay/sayers can eat there words now.:smile ozarktravler
excellent news! I am happy that you got it back and all is well. You were smarter than I would have been...LOL As for the naysayers, ozark, we ALL sometimes step out on a limb in some of our judgements. The thing to keep in mind is that some of this stuff IS real and some is NOT, so you should always approach giving an opinion carefully (especially in print)! It is easy to fall prey to being negative. I have to guard against it all the time. I usually learn at least something from each of these "grade this coin" threads. Most make me want to research the coin, and in doing so, I add to whatever it is that I already know and I am the winner in the experience. My advice to the users here is don't be afraid to offer an opinion, and more importantly, don't be afraid to be wrong! Learn something from every coin!
Great !!!! And a quick turnaround too !! It is very difficult to call'em from pics. I'm not going to try that anymore except with good clear shots, or unless obvious fakes. there are some tricky ones out there for sure.
Even the experts make mistakes....I'd be willing to bet the are some not genuine certifed coins out there. Since this one is somewhat questionable This is one slab I will never crack open.
Yes, you were correct. In Arizona Jacks defense I have recently purchased a 16X Harris Loupe and still cannot see the die chip on the S, and it probably wasn't the best photo. Being a corroded coin is a factor also. However you made the call. Maybe ANACS will offer you a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!
C.D., Charles Daughtrey, Coppercoins, Really cool guy. He has always been willing to share his expert opinion. It takes really great images for even an expert to be sure if it's real.
