Your Best Deal Ever

:hail:Years ago a friend of mine found some foreign coins , he wasn't a collector so he asked me if I wanted them for $5 . Not being a collector of world coins I glanced through them & then forgot about them . About 15 years ago I came across them & started to look through them , Found a bunch of silver English coins , oldest 1894 most from the 30s & 40s . Also loads of silver Mexican coins , the rest coins from all over the world in just about every metal except gold .
My question is what is the best deal you ever got ?

Just a few weeks back, I purchased a scarce bronze coin of Augustus for $7. I think that's my best find so far. I usually come across good deals at coin shows...i.e. finding certain coins for $10-$20 cheaper than I expected to pay, but nothing too crazy.

 

I got this for $135 a couple of years ago.


And then this coin foir $25 dollars.


If you look, there are still steals to be found on the internet. Ebay is still #1 for the steals/cherry picks. Here is an R-7 (only 4-12 examples known) coin I picked up for $58 dollars...

Paper money has yielded some of my best.

Years ago when Amazon had auctions I picked up a 1928 F Star note (red seal) in a nice AU for $20. Lists at $650 in CU now.

Found a few great errors at face value as well.

Coins. Snatched an 1864 Small Motto Two Cent piece off of ebay some years ago for $71. A nice, original F12 that lists about $250 now.
Also picked up a 14-D Lincoln last year in an ANACS F15 holder for $225. About $100 under bid.

Today was good actually. Boss was in a good mood and I went through a bunch of silver quarters for him. Pulled 5 Washingtons from the 30s, 5 common Standing Liberties including a 1923 with a weak date and six decent Barbers.

He charged me $3 each - about melt and I should have buyers lined up already for them. Gonna post a thread on that one.

Same here i find Paper money to be the great deals for me, When we were in South Africa my mum was still in her collecting times.. WE purchased a 1 pount note National Bank of Australasia (UNC) for $1,100, in a recent auction in Australia one of those sold for $18,000 , my Aussie banknote books from 2004 says they are worth about 12.5k and in 2007 book shows a 28,5k,
BTW the note is my mums but meh i can call its mine since all the other things she has got for her have come to my posesion MUAHAhA

 

Hmmm, good question. Most of my "deals" have been the generosity of other cointalker's, LOL. Here are what I can think of though at the moment:

1911-S Lincoln Cent, XF-40 $40 (also got a 12-S and 13-S, both in VF, from AZ Jack)
1914-S Lincoln Cent, XF-40, $72(not a great deal, but a good price)
1915-P Lincoln Cent, choice XF-45, $16 (got that one on my own :kewl
1924-S Lincoln Cent, VF with a sharp reverse, $4.50
1927-S Lincoln Cent, choice VF IMHO, sharp strike, paid like $4 I think, got from AZ Jack.
Oh, and also got a 1924-D in XF-45 I think, for $105, problem free from AZ Jack.

This is just what I can think of at the moment, not all the deals were just stumbled upon, got a little help, lol, but that's a few of them.

if you guys are trying to get me to put up anothe rpicture of the $10 than thats not happening i made between 4000 and 12000 on that one coin but after taking a deep look at both the $1 and the indian i would say there was a moment of weakness where i labelled the $10 slightly better but quickly regained my senses so beauty wise i would think the $1 is my best deal ever

 

When I ordered a bunch of coins from a nice ebay dealer and he mistakenly had given a quarter I ordered to someone else, and sent me a spanking new beautiful ASE as a replacement.

Hmmm - best deals are getting the 4 coin smithsonian set from the mint, maybe the 3 coin silver eagle set, or it might be a cherry pick I think I just made off heritage on tuesday. I can't wait to get the coin.

 

Interesting story on this........

I joined the local club and was invited to a coin show with one of the stalwarts. He's a 40 year collector. I picked up a nice VF+ buff that was priced as a P, but had that little squiggly "S" on the back. About a $125.00 diff in value. Proud as heck, I mentioned this to the stalwart and at the time his inital reaction was puzzling. He stated that I should immediately go back to the dealer, inform him of the mistake, and see where the conversation went. Seeing my confusion, he was about to explain then asked "who was it?" I told him. He said, never mind, that dealer would take advantage of his own mother for a deal. I learned a tremendous amount that day. Reputation on both sides of the table is extremely important.

At garage/yard/estate sales I always ask if there are any coins laying around. Same with any old knives, guns, swords, etc. Most of these sales are done with people that are afraid to put some things out due to theft, legality, unsure, etc. So I always ask.
At one such garage/yard type sale I asked about any old coins. A lady said there is this old jar full of pennies and she went inside and brought it out. She said I could have them but I'd had to count them out right there. I felt there was about $35 worth of pennies so I told her how about $50 without me counting them. She agreed so I left with that jar.
The bottom was all Indian Head Cents in like new condition. At home there was $32 worth of pennies (cents) in that jar. However, the latest date was a few 1955's. About $10 in Indian Cents at the bottom. All coins were in at least EF or better.
I always ask at these sales.

 

I may as well throw in another great deal. At a flea market there was a table with black 3 ringed binders full of coins. Each contained those plastic pages for 20 2x2 flips. One was all Lincoln Cents and the other was all Indian Head Nickels. I asked how much for each. The Nickels were $85 for 238 Indian Head Nickels (Buffalo Nickels). The cents was the same price but the coins appeared to be more of the just common dates. I took the Nickels. At home I discovered I now had enough to complete an album including the 3 legged Buffalo and plenty to spare.

 

Those are fantastic finds! I've never been that lucky. But I guess the best deal for me were the morgan and peace dollars that my grandfather collected and that my father left to me.

 

Mark, it's the 1828, O-107A. it's apparently mismarked in the Overton Books.

Ummmm, Becky. I hate to tell you but that coin is not genuine. See all those raised lumps on the eagle's wing? Those are a classic indication of a cast counterfeit.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

 

Darn good counterfiet too , I was thinking the same thing Toad , but I was hoping for her sake thats how they look under that much magnification , but every time I looked , those grains popped right up , and the edges of the design didn't look sharp enough for a proof , wonder if its a 1895 copy. Looks like the Morgans in the other thread .
