I have this 1960 D Nickel. About AU.
I see it has a Die Chip above the numeral 0 in the date. Or would you call it a Cud?

Question.. Do you think NGC would attribute such a minor mint error? o_O

Sorry for the slightly blurry pictures. One day I will get myself some good picture taking equipment! :sorry:

    No, they won't.

It's a very minor (and very common) die chip
that can be found on various letters of Liberty
and digit's of the date, on these early '60's nickels.

They won't certify it, and even if they did, you would be
wasting any and all of the submission fees/postage for a
coin that can be easily found.

I'm not concerned about the fees. I would submit it just for educational purposes just like many of my other minor Mint Errors.

This must have been a very common die chip. I had a B.U. roll I came across that had nearly half a roll with the same chip.

Personally I wouldn't send it in for grading. I'd kept it but not worth having it graded. Save your money.

I would personally call it a die chip and not a cud, because it touches the edge but doesn't break into it. I wouldn't bother submitting it...

If you do send it in please post the results. I have several of these myself and would like more information about them.

    JCro57 Making Errors Great Again

My opinion might be in the minority, but I actually think certifying and slabbing minor die chips would cheapen what it means to be a Mint error. The same goes for minor laminations and die cracks.

Such as showing an attributed example to those who post questions on any kind of error may it be a major or minor mint error. I have shown my many examples hundreds of times over the years. I have even been accused of lying and been told that my images are from the internet but it is not so. And you know this very well ;)

I want to add that even though I own hundreds of certified mint errors.. I don't have every known kind. My goal us to own every kind. Even if it takes me another 34 years to do so.
    (Not including varieties)

Think of it as putting together the worlds largest type set. Both major and minor mint errors ;) (even with Details Grade!)

I do not know any such thing, but that is beside the point.

I know what would be a real educational purpose is if you could get photos of your fine error coins, major and minor to be posted on Error-ref. Even if it meant cracking open a few slabs to take proper photos. I think their website is quite lacking in their photographic depiction of error coins which makes for an inadequate website for those who want to learn. I think you should be able to have the photos attributed to yourself and they will still be on the website long after you and your collection are gone. JMO.

What I meant was that you have seen many of my slabs over the years ;)

Buy some coin slabs and put your minor errors in them and attribute/certify them yourself.
