I'll bet it's from the holder.

I think what happened is that as you transported it, the coin rocked back & forth, thereby causing the bell's clapper to swing back & forth, leaving the marks on the reverse.

(Sorry, I'm trying new material for "open mike" night on the stage...but the stage leaves @ 4, & I think I'm going to miss it.) :D

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

The scratches in front of Franklin's nose are on the holder. The scratches under his bust and at the bottom of the reverse are on the coin. They are scratches. This appears to be a details coin, from what I see.

Yes quite a few. Now I am more anxious to get to the bank tomorrow to check all of them

I will check them all under at least 30X power. I have learned that I don't know what a coin looks like until I have looked at it under magnification. I certainly did not notice the scratches when I bought them.

For scratches this severe, the only magnification you might need are standard eyeglasses. If they are scratches, they should be quite obvious even at arms length.

When you say "details" what does that mean?

It can be "fun" to look at under high mag.; I do it a lot, but it does start playing tricks, especially with variable lighting & angles.

Really, the optimum mag is less than 20x, prob. 10 - 16x in most cases, depending on what you're looking for; beware the "lighting" tricks!;)

It means that it wouldn't straight grade (I can't grade it PR-64 or whatever it might be). The grade on the coin, if those are scratches, would be "Proof Details." If a coin has problems (cleaning, scratches, polished, doctored, etc), we say that it has UNC Details, or Proof Details, or VF details, as the case may be - numerical grades are reserved for problem free or market acceptable coins.
