Keep an eye out for something like this. It may not be significant but it's interesting...

That is something super rare and yet another "thing" to try not to forget to notice on a coin. They dont sound too confident about how they occur on that link.

I recommend avoiding using unverified words like "super rare".

I suppose it has different meanings to different people. To me, it means ....Im never going to see one. Point is its just another thing to watch for with coins that I will probably forget about tomorrow.

I guess my question is then....is it super rare by any definition? I guess they didnt say in the article anything about numbers.

We have no way of knowing whether this actually exists, whether it's an actual error, let alone how many of these there are out there. These are simply random photos shared with us with very little context. We shouldn't be too quick/careless to toss out words like "super rare" without even being able to verify much about it. Anyway, your response tells me that my point was lost on you and that I'm probably wasting my efforts. I hop you have a great day and enjoy your numismatic adventures.

seattle...didnt mean to get you wound up! Apologies! However, the article says that a very few different years had some "circles" on them. Is it an actual error? I dont know (I dont think so) and I didnt even think of that aspect. To me it exists because ...well, its there and theres a bunch of photos with similar circles. Its not listed on Wexlers or VV that I seen so to that extent, I guess its not real? I seriously did not realize a simple phrase like super rare would cause such anxiety and anger.

Didnt mean to force you into wasting your time! I will remain cordial. Feel free to block me so you dont have to waste your time again!

Let me ask you this in all seriousness. If the circles arent "rare" then what would be the implications of someone like me even saying that? What does it matter? Nobody cares what I am saying about circles let alone anything about coins...its just my opinion. People listen to members like you, Paddy, Chris, Fred etc. Now I do remember the guy a month back who kept putting in the title of his famous PMD coins they were "super rare" but thats different then me talking an opinion about some sort of coin anomaly referenced on error-ref .com. ....that honestly, seems to be pretty rare lol?!?!

Also, I do indeed enjoy my odd adventures hunting and researching coins!

I'm off to bed. Will answer in the morning. I'm not wound up, just weary of using words without really understanding their meaning or potential impact.

First of all, thank you for asking the questions you did. I believe the answers to them to be important.

There are two powerful concepts in psychology that explain how people perceive something when they really wish it to be true or false.

The first is confirmation bias, in which someone, who thinks they have something special, will see comments like "super rare" and immediately confirm their item to be just that.

The second is cognitive dissonance, in which people ignore any evidence that disproves their beliefs, and often use the evidence against them to somehow support them. We see this often with comments like "just jealous" or "haters".

People who believe something to be rare and valuable will waste time and money trying to "strike it rich". We see people everyday who watch a YouTube video about rare coins and then come here with damaged or common coins hoping we will tell them they've found the big one.

Using words like super rare, without being sure, offers a dangerous shred of hope to people who really don't need it. This is why I try to keep people from wildly guessing about errors and varieties, and putting false hope into others.

Furthermore, if you go back to the error-ref discussion on circles, you should notice two important things:
    1. There is absolutely no mention of occurrence in that explanation. All it says is unknown cause. Unknown cause does not translate to "rare" or "super rare".
    2. The circles shown in the article do not match the images above in terms of size, location, or appearance. We cannot definitively say they are the same. If anything, it is more likely that they are not the same.
