I want to find out how a value is determined and who determined it in a catalog such as KP World coins. I am going too give a good example. I know auction prics realized is a good bet but say for example my 1960 D German mark in M S 63 condition is priced 750.00 it is not silver the montage is not paticurally low it must have some reason for such a value. How was it vaued and who determined that

If I understand correctly, KP has a LONG list of specialists/dealers, one or more for each country and time period.
They are asked yearly to look at the current catalog and modify the prices as they see fit.
Hard to say how honest that procedure is.

Sort of like asking your barber if you need a haircut.

I don't know the coin, but sometimes it's a matter of condition rarity, meaning it could be scarce in MS grade. Or maybe the guide is whack. Better to check for recent sales for value when possible.

I do know that the values used in those catalogs are good for identification only. The prices reflected there are not to be used as anything that represents the value however. No rhyme or reason to their numbers.

Perhaps I'm misremembering, but didn't we recently address this in another thread about your German mark with a $750 catalog value?

This was just an example to use but there are a bunch of World coins that high price in mint condition just like the example that I am using and have no precious metals or they are not paticurally short printed and l am trying to understand how the values are determined who determined it if not for a sale in auction. The 750.00 price was placed on the coin for some reason? I just was curious if it might have actually procured that at some point. I guess if you could never get the price the catalog lists it for why price it so high. That would be for any world coin similar to this example

Blindfolded chimps tossing darts could do as good a job as those "specialists."

Just based on my experience, anyway. Your mileage may vary.
