This star brought a tear to my eye....

I've given this a lot of thought because it appears to be a very emotional topic for many collectors, Georgers and Williers. Personally, I would have preferred to have been informed in a calm manner what the repercussions of stamping star notes and historical currency are, as far as collectors go. I believe it would have been informative and perhaps influenced some who stamps bills. I would not want to have intentionally done anything to make your hobby more difficult. It appears that many individuals became defensive, and that generally does not help in the dissemination of information.

On a positive note, I was not aware that this site existed and I find it very informative. I semi-seriously collect US currency (mainly because of what I learned from Where's George) and may expand into coins now.

    Good luck with your hobby.

Can't we all just get allong?

I am a Georger who was drawn to this site beacuse of the topic at hand... What is really sad is that our hobbies over-lap in so many ways yet we are bickering. It would be so much more beneficial if we would exchange information and ideas rather than flame one another!

I am a teacher in a HS in Philadelphia and though WG have been able to teach my students A LOT about money, history, the art of money, maps / geography and collecting. There is a lot of good done through Georging when it comes to education!

Spend them around me - I will collect them and add them to my collection. Maybe in a hundred years these will be like counter stamped coins. Maybe they will even be worth more since coinlover stamped them. :)

I like troodons and hontonai answers.

Don't forget that whoever stamped these stamped about 50 of them and dropped them at a bank, which is against the rules of WG. So not only did he cheat, but his cheating also defaced a star note! lol oh well

If all 50 stamped notes were from the same place, and entered within hours of each other, you should go onto Where's George and contact the webmaster.

Any "good Georger" who plays by the rules DOESN'T dump their bills in banks! That IS against the rules and SHOULD be reported!

Once I got a strap of $2's from the bank. 17 of the $2's were entered by the same person! I reported the person!

I post on both sites and have made a couple great connections for the notes I collect over on WG. Ya, it's really too bad the star note got stamped but it's not the end of the world. It's like the spouse gold coins that get melted for the gold - makes the rest a little more valuable and as a collector that can only help the value of mine. Some of the posters over there brag about stamping Barr notes that have been circulated - as much as it makes me cringe - how valuable is a well circulated Barr note now or at any time in the future? Would I do it - NO - can I do anything about someone else doing it - NO - life is too short and there are more important things to care about where we can really make a difference. If the site attracts people to the hobby - then that's good for the hobby. I would bet more harm is done by new coin collectors handling coins improperly than by all of the people stamping WG on notes. Lets move on and welcome some of the new members to CT!

that strap could have taken months to compile, that person may have stamped 20 $2's but if he spent them in the same town they might all make it to the bank, i've done straps of 1's and then spend them a few at a time but try to spread them out.

Um, when was this decided? I looked all over WG? and I can't find where everyone agreed to this. Nobody asked me. ;)

To the user who stamped this highly desirable star note's credit, it is possible that he himself did not put all of those bills in a bank, he could have spent them at a gas station or store and they just happened to have not been given out in change as was expected.

Now as far as wheres george goes, the most disturbing aspect to me above stamping old high-grade notes and rare star notes has to do with user notes. Last December the administrator of "wheres george" banned Christian words such as Christ, Jesus, God, Lord, etc. These were the ONLY words that he initially banned and only after a high amount of pressure did this administrator ban other words from being used in user notes. The administrator banned these words by having them flat-out deleted from the user notes, leaving many user notes to read as gibberish. Being that these were the only words that were initially banned, this can be interpreted as being nothing short of a full out assault against people of faith but especially Christians. One could say well "What purpose do these words have in user notes anyways and what could they possibly do with tracking currency?". There are many times when such words are appropiate, such as when someone donates a bill to a church which has one of the above banned words in it as its name! Read about it here:
    http://forums.wheresgeorge.com/showthread.php?t=98656
This is one of the most cruel and incomprehensible things that I have ever seen with wheres george and any and all future members of the above site should be fully aware of this before joining.

That is true, and I told Hank as much because they all had different enter dates and even places. ...I also took a look at the guy's profile etc and didn't detect anything that looked like he was a "dumper" (no inflated George score etc).

    See, I'm not cold hearted!

I detect a mad ex-Georger in hiding??

Hank (the operator / creator) of WG just feels that no religion should be prominent in in bill tracking aspect of Georging - the site is not about religion, it is about bill tracking. What's wrong with that? People were beginning to abuse the user notes when they entered bills... quoting scripture etc. How would you feel if you were Christian and someone told you that you HAVE TO read the Koran? It's the same thing... Also, if you picked up someone's bill and entered it and there was a huge Star of David, cross (insert your religious preference here) in your face in the signature that may turn you off from Georging because you may think that it is some kind of site about religion. Hank just wants to make everyone feel welcome to use the site.

Hank doesn't outlaw religion on the forums... people continue to use religious symbols for their avatars and quote various things from the bible and other religious books in their signatures. There is also a whole forum dedicated to "prayers and wellness" where people post prayers, prayer requests, things from various religious beliefs as well as help each other when in need.

    I'm a georger and a willier.

I think the point that should be made is that we trackers and you collecters have similar hobbies. One could argue that its better that a bill circulate with a stamp on it than sit in a sock drawer, but you could also argue that its bad to "make money look bad".

Whats next we stop putting bills in g-strings cause they wrinkle a * note?
