Peter I respect you for putting up with all the nonsense of hosting this site, expense etc. and endeavouring on still. I myself have been through website hosts a few times, until I went back to my original host and have stayed there ever since.

It just bites when the site goes o/l for a bit, and you cannot get your numismatic buzz. But thank you for making this a great forum.

And yes, you do deserve a really big hug, or possibly a hip-hip-hooray!

My hubby has been hosting a website well over 10 years now. I know what he puts into it, not only his time, but his hard-earned money from his regular job.
A few days ago his server flew the coop. He about had a heart attack.
10 years plus of thousands upon thousands of photographs were gone in a blink of any eye. This time it was not the internet provider, but the machine itself.
I know he put a lot of $ into buying the computer and server, and back up storage and power failure back-up batteries, etc., etc.

In short, he must dish out nearly $1,000.00 to have someone rescue the images and get them back to him so he can get them back online for his members.

His members are so loyal and grateful for the website that they often send donations to help with the expenses involved.

Do you have a way for us to help you out?

Maybe when its time for a renewal you should focus on a SLA with HA. That way we wont have you knocking holes in the wall. I would also recommend a DL585 next time you need a box. Let me know if you need any help.

I want to say again, thanks for all the time, effort and money you put in this site. We all enjoy it and life would be much duller without it.
When I first started looking for a coin forum a few years ago I looked at a few, but this is the only one that held my interest.
The members and the staff are just great here.

Yea, this site is the first site that I have felt lost without getting my daily fix. Really bummed me out when I couldn't get on.

Peter, i only know a little about computers but is it possible to RAID stripe the drives so that an exact image would be created on the 'back-up' drive? so when the main drive fails, you swap the 2nd drive to the first that failed, and continue on....

 

That's crazy enough that it just might be too much for me to understand!

 

raid-1 saves the same data to all hard drives of the array. Read errors are not fatal here. Information is safe as long as at least one of the hard drives in the array is working.
then there are a few others such as raid-0 which combines two separate hard drives together too utilize the speed of both, (faster start up times, and load up times for information on the hdd)
then there is raid-5 which seperates the same file onto two or more hdd's thus preventing a total loss of all information. does this help you out?
