It Looks like post mint damage. You have to remember this coin is minted in 1972...that's a 47-year-old coin. Odds are it's just worth $0.01 When I started, I use to collect everything. But, I went and bought a handheld microscope and now I only collect flawless coins with no scratches, or coins that have die cracks just for fun. But finding the flawless coins (IMHO) is where it's at. Good luck and welcome to CoinTalk!
Moddy.... One thing to keep in mind as you look at these old cents. Copper is a very soft metal. It doesn't take much of a ding to move the surface metal around thus giving the appearance of being something that it isn't.
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Some people call this type of damage "road rash". Others say that it is a "parking lot" coin. Either way, it was not made to look like this at the Mint. It is much better for you to know and understand how coins are made. Looking for errors at this point is like putting the cart before the horse. It is not a very difficult process, but there are an infinite number of ways that coins can be damaged once they leave the Mint. Chris
