Hi, just want to know what are your thoughts and value on this baby? Does it look cleaned or something? Regards, Rado
Appears to have been cleaned but I'd take it anyway if the price was right. Way to few made to worry about a little cleaning. As long as it is real though.
Cleaned and corroded, but I see nothing to tell me that it is fake. Just guessing at a value, $400 to $500. Possibly less depending on the corrosion.
That thing's been through a few beatings to say the least. But, for $100, I would have bought it too. Guy~
I shot my self in the foot last VDB thread, so I'm extra carefull on this one. I don't like it. mintmark shape and position, and the VDB is way off, as well as the cast appearance. These have only 4 obverse dies, mintmark position is everything, and genuine VDBs have a very distinct shape and spacing on the VDB. It is questionable .
Jack, I believe you are correct on that! The Mintmark also looks too small for the Date and appears to a Mintmark sliced off of a 1940-S Cent with the Micro "S". Frank
... and potentially soldered on (note the dark spot directly next to the m/m at 5-6 o'clock). Otherwise the VDB looks correct in shape and position. My thought is that this is a 1909 VDB from Philadelphia, and is an added S alteration.
I also think the B on the reverse is wrong. Periods, spacing and rotation, and tilt are ok, but the B is iffy.
That MM is in the exact position as the authentic pictured in my "Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection". I have no idea which die that is, but both are the same identical position. The shape of the "S" are also both the same, but his coin is a little fatter. I attribute that to the wear. As for the V, D, B, and dots, they all seem to be in the correct position. As for the mid-section of the "B", I cannot make out enough detail to say that it is angled correctly because there is a dark stripe and/or ding that obscures part of it.
I only said " questionable" and does not "appear" correct. The PCGS book pictures a die #3 or #4 position, they are very similar. I have learned enough to not make a solid concrete decision based on pics on a screen. This coin is if genuine, a die #3 example. My opinion is only the coin is questionable, I would not risk it, nothing more or less, just too much of a gamble on a problem coin, if in fact it were genuine. These have a long shelf life if they are problematic.
Cleaned, definetly. Authentic, like said, questionable. The "B" on the reverse doesn't seem right, but it could be just the pics. Best of luck to you on it making the right decision. :thumb: Phoenix
Maybe it is just me or the picure but it almost looks like there is very small writing just above the left Wheat Stalk stem (below the 1st "A" in AMERICA) which extends Southeast to just below the right Wheat Stalk stem. If it is writing, I wonder what it says??!! Frank
