Oh, wow... Now that is historically cool. :)

Pretty cool historically to find that! It looks like he needed to send the money into the treasury to get face value for it. Unfortunately although the fronts look ok, it appears they are all stuck together and would crumble or tear if he tried to take them apart.

That's what I'm thinking. The article says he's "hoping" the Treasury will find $1700 in the box, which seems to imply that the money was so damaged that he couldn't even count it....

I'm going to have to agree, based on the pics, I'm guessing that these notes would note be worth more than face UNLESS they had a really cool story to go with them (like the DB Cooper notes).

well i would think the Silver certs $1 would only be face because of the heavy damage.,. but for there to be $1700 in the box, higher denominations would have to be present ... and those could easily fetch more then face even in bad shape. no?

That may be true, but to get maximum value from the BEP, they need to be convinced that the remainder of the note was actually destroyed and can not be redeemed. To gain the maximum confidence from the BEP inspectors, one would need to ship the entire container with as little disturbance as possible.

If the finder had attempted search the notes for ones that may have still been valuable in the present condition, how much would he have stood to lose from the BEP inspectors.

Your welcome. I would have loved to make a find like that. Then I would do my best to preserve what is there. I would not return it to the BEP, the story behind them was good - even if they were not worth more than face to collectors. Just me.
