Buying 16d Merc with no return

From another thread you guys talked me into buying my 16d Mercury dime in graded only which I am doing via searches for the last 3 weeks. I have limited dollars and am pursuing either a VG-8 or VG-10 from the 3 top graders. I have seen some nice ones that are being offered but some of the ebay sellers are not taking returns. Some have very good feedback. My question is would I buy a coin valued at approx $1,500 or more and not be able to return it. It sort of scares me. What do you guys (gals) think. Most of the ebay feedback are from sales in the $10-$200 range. Get back to me whenever. Thanks in advance.

I believe that even if the buyer does not take returns, if the coin was not as advertised (counterfeit, etc.) you could go through EBay and get refunded.
But if it is genuine and graded, and a real 1916-D, the seller probably doesn't want all the expense, legwork and hassle to handle returns, back and forth, and relisting
etc. I stopped buying on EBay some years ago. If there is a coin show in your area
that might be a venue to consider, and you might get a nicer graded 16-D at a lower price.

Also, what is the rush? Do you absolutely have to have it now? Maybe wait a bit to find the "perfect" coin.

 

Limited dollars? Why you would even look at key dates is beyond me... my minimum grade for any coin I purchase is VF30 and I believe there are only 2-3 in my entire collection. I’d wait and save money for a higher grade example. If you buy from a dealer, they should accept returns.

 

The FUN Show is due in January in Orlando. If there is no rush, there will be about 1,500 dealers present, and I'm pretty sure that you can find one there.

eBay probably let you force a return regardless of what the seller says (SNAD - Significantly Not As Described)


But why risk it? You are most likely going to send it off to be graded at a cost of maybe $100. Why should YOU be the party taking the risk???

 

I live down here in Rehoboth Beach, DE. This is like the graveyard of coin shows and dealers. I'll be 80 in 2 months and cant drive far anymore or I would head over to Maryland but then the large 2-3 hour backups on the bay bride along with the tolls make it not worth it. Even the coin shows around here only have about 10-15 dealers. At the last show no dealer had a 16d for sale. That's why I stick to ebay mostly. Tried collectors corner but that's worse than ebay. Half the coins listed are not even available on their sites.

 

And unfortunately to get your hands on a decent example you're going to have to go for the better auction houses or the better dealers and they know what they have and what it's worth...

An AG3 is going to run you $425-450...

 

The 'No Returns' posting hurts sales and prices. I love to buy from guys posting that they don't take returns. I make an offer and know that if it does have a problem (damaged, counterfeit, etc.) that ebay will allow a return.

 

AG3's going for $700-$750 up graded. G6 is the most being sold online and they start at about $1000.

 

Yes that is the going price, but it is an overinflated price.
There are SO many coins that are much rarer and cost much less.
My Pilgrim tercentenary 1921 has a mintage of 20,000 and it's
in the $100 area (a little more). And more for MS coins.
Surviving pieces may have some affect as all of these were saved.

Why the 1916-D? You can get a nice 42/41 or 42/41 D variety for less and there are fewer of them IMO, Jim

 

No returns on a coin like that? No deal.

 

The 16d will complete my collection. I have the 41/42 P and D, and the Micro S.

 

It’s probably the last coin I would ever buy myself since it’s just so overpriced for something not rare at all but if it’s the last one you need for the set gotta do it!

I have no issue buying with no returns if the images are good. Especially in the grade range you’re looking at it’s quite easy to pick one out you know you’ll like from decent pictures.

It all depends on where and how you buy that coin.
