well of the two coins i posted i like the 1862 a bit better i hope people realize that although both coins are good this is by far a very very PQ coin
The 1862's are a bit of an enigma. They were minted, but probably went right into a vault, they sure did not circulate during the War. By that time the then highly unpopular greenbacks were being floated by the Federal government. One of my favourite notes from that era that I own. I actually have small hoard of these from an estate.
I coul be wrong, but I think that's another classic case of Longacre doubling (who is also the engraver / designer of this piece). It's fairly common. I have a couple with similar doubling.
yeah getting a nic $3 is real dificult and expensive i had a nice 3 cent and the $3 locked up but then a lil kid showed me that the time was up and i lost the 3 cent without a bid and the 3 $ by 50 bucks i
unfortunately its very normal although it is outline doubling or what 900 called it for more info go here http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cach...ing&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a
Personally, I really like gold $1s. And this one is very nice. As you know, they're known for poor strikes and clashed dies. This one has neither ! Fabulous strike, no es el clasho. I wonder if it was a really early strike, right after they set up for the first run with these dies. These were low mintage enough - I suppose they made the whole run with only one die pairing. Anybody know about that ?
