I decided to send these two coins through PCGS, and I am happy, but disappointed; if you know what I mean. So any thoughts/opinions on this, I just wanted to share these two.

The half dollar, cleaned. I thought it was at least a 58. This majorly decreases the value. Maybe $1000 at best since its 0-106 b, TTF on the Reverse; (Overton 106 die crack). It even has the lettered rim! Just sad that this beautiful coin could get details.

The Barber was my Grandfathers: who owned a coin store and ran coin shows back in the 80s, and I was at least expecting a 64+. There is full lustre, and a magnificent golden ring across liberty head. I could maybe get $300 on eBay for it; but since its my Gpa's, I'll hold on to it.

I can't see the coins well enough to form an honest opinion of the grades.
Can you post better pics of each coin separately ?

Ouch! Wait a minute, wait a minute! Your grandfather owned a coin store and ran coin shows?? You had no idea about this coin?

Did you at least post it here for opinions before you submitted it?

MS65 Barber dimes only sell for $360 these days. I've seen 63's go for like $140.
The 1817 half dollar is an O-106. The 106a is the single leaf, if I'm not mistaken. An AU details 1817 O-106 is probably a $500 coin max, imo.

Wow. I love that half. I would've sent it in too. I've had my fair share come back cleaned. Not always easy to tell if they'll get by. Sometimes they will be lenient on older stuff if it isn't terrible, as cleaning was an acceptable practice back in the day.

There's no way I could say if that half was AU, MS or cleaned. They're the pros. I think it just has something to do with the color and the shininess. There's a certain look it should have and if doesn't, even if it was only dipped, details grade. That's a shame, I feel for you.
I have a 1916 MS-63 that's a nice toner. I paid well over list to get it. Again, how they determine that's a 63 and not a 64 I don't know. Must be some little mark they didn't like. Not a big value diff anyway.

It seems it's very rare for these old 19th century coins to have made it through the "cleaning is acceptable period" unscathed. Anybody who owned them over decades and then wanted to re-sell would have had full incentive to clean them in some way. It's a wonder any of them made it through uncleaned. They almost would have had to been not known about or forgotten. Everybody wanted shiny coins. The toning and tarnish was ugly.... Until it wasn't acceptable anymore by modern standards.

Very nice looking coins. It's not much of a comfort but PCGS only denotes "Cleaned", whereas NGC denotes "Improperly Cleaned".
Just curious. Does anyone know what they used in the 1800's to clean coins with?

Please remember if we catch people with more than the one account they are at risk of permanent ban as several have learned in the last few days. Please long term members, don't get caught up. Fair warning, Jim

I’d try cracking the half and sending again. Sometimes it takes more than one try for a straight grade

Exactly, it’s all about the color and the remaining luster for the grade. @Colby J. your coins are nice, but none of them is a top dollar coin. Next time you submit coins, don’t be cheap, make sure to select a grading tier which includes online pictures.

I can't tell why the half was called cleaned from here, but there's probably some parts of the surface that are too glossy or that show a patch of hairlines from an aggressive wipe.

I sent these through my LCS, so I had no control on the grading tier, there is a one price that they charge for all coins for all standard PCGS slabs. I have a membership only with NGC--so I thought id do PCGS for a change.

I had another email that I changed so I had to make another account. But when I searched up that old account it wasn't there. Sorry, I didn't know you couldn't have multiple accounts
