1984 square quarter

    I wrote a short program to square a round coin a while back (March 2016, so it seems), and it came out pretty much like this one.

    Mind you, this is perfectly square. I could easily add something that rounded off corners a bit, but didn't bother at the time. I got the code right on the first try and didn't want to screw that up.

    I'm confused. Did someone actually create a squared quarter from a round one? Did the US Mint do it as an experiment? Is it only a digital fantasy piece?

    Someone used software back in the 80s to design a square quarter, then had dies prepared with modified denomination and struck fantasy pieces with them. Not many were made, then the company dissolved. Possibly one of the first coins designed by a computer.

    There are 13 of them on Ebay now. They are not cheap either.

    At EAC this year they had a "squared" New Jersey Copper. Sorry no picture, and I didn't buy one. Oh and the squared quarter was made by Medallic Arts Co.
