I am quite mad at myself right now. I caught this neat little lot on ebay (reputable seller, and I'm sure the coins are genuine - before you even ask). I was out and forgot to bid. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140232631487&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=004 Three kinda worn denarii, right? Nothing too special. But notice the one on the bottom right. Orbiana, wife of Severus Alexander. Her denarii sell for into triple digits. And this lot went for only thirty eight. Oh well, there will be more. Anyone have similar stories to share?
Besides missing out on some hot US mint offerings, I have under bid and over bid at live auctions by using printed price guides. (It's hard to bring completed auction results to a live auction!)
I felt like kicking myself when I recieved a 1943-P Wartime Nickel, and a closer look revealed the 3/2. The details were so weak, I underestimated it. When I went to sell all my silver, that nickel was included. Five days later I went into that same shop, there was my nickel for $65.00. 1943-P 3/2.
Ever feel like kicking myself, I still lament the fact that a local dealer called me in last summer when he had a 19th century gold type set come in, all mintmarks, but no S mints, and I did NOT buy the flipping thing right there on the spot. The lowest grade in the lot was AU. There were all three types of the $1, an 1854 O $3 etc. The $10's and $20's were CC of course.
dont worry if all goes to plan you will get to see some nice gold coins this wekend at least it will take some of the grief away but i know what you mean
Actually what I am lusting after most right now is not golden, but rather cupro-nickel. But I did get something nice, large, gold and CC today.
What you have is a youth problem. If you get as old as me all that sort of stuff goes away. Us older people usually just forget what we missed out on so no problem. I'm sure in the past there was many things I missed out on but just can't remember them.
LOL. Just about what I was going to say. Age causes a LOT of mistakes to be forgotten. I only remember the real recent ones, and fortunately there aren't many. Only one I can remember is overpaying for a coin. I let the coin "grab me", and forgot to look around first. Cost me $100 extra.
You don't know what the winners maximum bid was for, though. He might have put in a max bid of say $150, so even if you had bid $39 or $40, you would have still fallen quite short. There are far too many coins out there to regret a missed purchase, and if you live long enough, you will have many more opportunities!
About 5 years ago I had the chance to get my first Type II Liberty DE, an 1876-S graded MS-60 by ICG for $450, BIN on eBay. That was a really good price then, almost too good to believe. I thought there had to have been some catch to the auction- crazy shipping charges, no insurance offered, etc. I read the description from top to bottom three times before deciding to pull the trigger- only problem was someone beat me to it while I was rereading the fine print!
Yeah, Type II Liberty Double Eagle Type I- 1849-1866, no "In God We Trust" motto, "Twenty D" on the reverse Type II- 1867-1876, "In God We Trust" motto and "Twenty D" on the reverse Type III- 1877-1907, "In God We Trust" motto and "Twenty Dollars" on the reverse
Thanks. I've got one of each for my typeset (1852, 1870-S & 1888). Just never see them referred to as DE.
I am currently after a Type 1 DE, preferably with a mintmark. I would really like an O, especially the 1861-O. Lots of people know about the 1861-O half dollars, not so many know about the 1861-O DEs.
LAMO After reading kanga's post I was reminded that I too am missing the Type I. Liberty DEs are my favorite coins, hands down. I would like to have an O mint mark one day because everything I own now is P, D, or S. Getting a Half Eagle or an Eagle with a C or a CC mint mark would really choice also (and terribly expensive), but as far as the Type I I'll probably concentrate on a year first. I might shoot for 1850. The 1850-S in XF doesn't seem to be that bad cost wise.
