What would cause a coin to be affected on obverse but not reverse like this? Thanks again..

Only the person who created that damage would know how it was done.
You don't have to damage both sides of a coin. One is all it takes.
Getting stuff on the obverse but not the reverse. Sitting face-down on a Pepsi spill, maybe?
