Only 3 years, but if you think that 3 years gives you no time to collect anything-think again. I got a 1916-D dime, 3 legged buffalo, and Indian $2.50. My dad bought them all for me when I started. Thats what got me into it when he told me the values.
The earliest I can remember collecting is 1954. I searched a lot of pennies for that weird 1955 penny. Despite living in Pennsylvania, I never did find one. I have had more than one slow period since then.
I began collecting back in 1961! My family was in the theatre business and my Dad and Grandad always had lots and lots of change to sort through. Back then I could find Indian Head nickles, Standing Lib Quarters and even some Indian Head Pennies. Recently got back into it after I retired. What a great hobby. I've heard it called the King of Hobbies and the Hobby of Kings! I'm no king!
Not really, will admit though that certain coins are tempting from time to time. What makes it easier is that I discovered that the study of the coins and learning about them actually pleases me more than owning them ever did. I guess that was the case all along, I just never realized it.
About 25 years for me. Got more serious about 15 years ago when I got my present job and had the extra income to spend on it. Guy~
Started the state quarters in '99. But only been serious for about two years now. Got serious when I got my grandfathers coins after he passed away.
Got started 15 years ago at age 9. I kind of got out of it from age 15-22. I've been really into it again for a little over 2 years now.
I started collecting coins in 1964 so 44 years for me. But there were many years where I did not actively collect.
I have been collecting coins of some sort for over thirty years, but the 12 yr old collector I was, does not even bear comparison to the 42 yr old numismatist I am now!
So the average for the 42 responders so far is about 28 years, 10 months, with significant unspecified "time outs" - maybe 20 years or so of active collecting per responder. Impressive, to say the least.
It's nice here. My story exactly, except I got back into it in 2005. Since then, I've learned so much, especially through CoinTalk. When I welcome someone to CT I state the same thing: "Welcome to CT. You'll learn a lot here." That is my advice to the newcomers who are just starting out and to the long time hobbyist. CoinTalk will enlighten all collectors of all degrees. You can't beat this place for collective knowledge and fair and honest opinions while still finding sincere camaraderie and people you can like AND trust. Bruce
