Hi my daughter found a nickel on her softball field. It seems to be a 1943 p double eye. I saw pictures of it here and was wondering about the value. I guess the range of value since I am clueless as to what condition it would be considered. You can clearly see everything though. As you can tell by my post I know nothing about coin collecting. She picked it up and kept it just thinking it was neat looking. At the moment it is in her shoe as her good luck nickel since she won the game. I'm wondering if I need to have her remove it and put it away before she loses it.
Probably best to put it on the side for her , it's a 35% silver , war nickle , the double eye variety can be worth up to $100 in worn condition , but most likely $25 in VF . Still , a very nice find your daughter made .:smile:hail: rzage It is a very good good luck charm !
WOW!! I just called my husband and told him to take it away from her. I guess I will suggest we put it away for her. If she decides she would like to sell it is there a listing of reputable dealers? In other words if I tell her it could have some value how do I go about getting it for her? I appreciate you experts taking the time for me.
Probably put it on E-BAY . don't forget to put a mininum bid that you will except . Also someone else might come up with a better idea. Sorry I can't give you more info but I never sold anything on E-BAY or any other sites . Check your thread later or post another asking the best way to sell it . rzage
IMO I would keep it. Is the 25 bucks worth getting rid of a coin your daughter found? keep it, Its a piece of history!

Great find! And I might add a great start to her nickel collection! Could you post some pictures? We would be better able to determine the value and if it is the Doubled Eye variety.
From the Cherry pickers guide: "Doubling is visible on the date, LIBERTY, the motto, and most visibly the eye. There is a secondary eye below the primary eye". One of the orig. Top 100 Jeff. varieties and it's becoming difficult to find. The book say's only 125 to 250 are known to exist. A truly rare and valuable find.
This may be a silly question, but, knowing that variety, how did a non-collector notice the doubled eye? I need a loupe to check for the variety.
WOW!!! I hope it is one. I do have to try to get a picture up. We haven't been able to get the lighting right to see it. As to amateurs, she simply saw it on the ground during a softball game and thought it looked different. The p stood out to her and also the date. 1943 seems ancient to a 13 year old.:smile After the weekend of tournaments she remembered it was in her cleats and did a search for it. She was fascinated to find it was a war nickel and then the post here of the picture of the double eye came up and she said mom look I think this is my nickel. We got out a magnifying glass and it sure looks like it. Although we did not notice the doubling at liberty. It stood out more at the eye and also at the neck and shirt area. Ok without sounding like a total looney I was at a party last year where a psychic was the entertainment and she told me my daughter would find a very interesting coin in the dirt and that it will be from her great grandfather so she has always took an extra look at any coins found in the dirt. lol ok ok now you all think I am crazy. Oh and my dad was born in 1943. lol I have a question. We read that you should not clean it. Is there anything you can soak it in that is ok or can you at least bathe it in real hot water? It's dirty where the doubling seems to be.
