I have been wanting a lesson on clashed dies. I know what causes them, but I just cant seem to pick them out. PLEASE explain what about this penny indicates a die clash. I see the mark between the columns....Just seems to me a die clash woukd be much more obvious somehow. How do I recognize a clashed coin? I'm not seeing anything on the obverse that stands out to me. clsh1.jpg

Look at an overlay to find matching marks on the coin that would indicate a clash. Clash-LC-1960b.jpg
On this coin,it looks like most of the clash marks on the obverse were polished away, there aren't many signs left of it

@Beardigger- Some are obvious and some are not so obvious. You have to train your eyes to know what to look for. You don't have to see a clash on the obv. to have a clash on the rev.

A clash can appear on both or one side. The overlay shows where the clash would be and what to look for. The same applies for all denominations. They can be very small, smaller than this example or they can be famous, lijevyje Bugs Bunny variety on Franklin Half Dollars. They can also be huge. You just have to learn what to look for.

I don't think your coin is a die clash. The area you circled is opposite the design feature of Abe's neck. Those two areas would not touch each other in a clash situation. A die clash is field on field of each die. I can not figure out how the recessed design feature came into contact with the field of the other die.It looks more like a die chip to me.

This is absolutely 100% a die clash. The clash will not fall in the exact same spot everytime, there are exact overlays you can find for each year. In this clash,if you look at the thumbnails, the back of his neckline extends from the top of column 2 and rounds off at the bottom of column 3, the recession you see circled at Column 7 is the rounding from his neck to his chin. It is right.

The neck and chin line should be in column 8 and 9.

It's not an exact science, the image location can vary.

The clash image can also be offset laterally from the normal position, think about what you would see if the dies were misaligned when they clash. Misaligned dies are fairly common so clashes from misaligned dies should also be fairly common. When an overlay is posted they are typically done withthe dies correctly oriented. You have to look at the overlay and if it doesn't match the marks on you coin you then have to determine whether if the dies were rotated or offset would they match up. In the case of the OP coin if the obv die was misaligned the junction of the jaw and neck could be moved from bay 8 to bay 7 and would match the clash mark on the OP coin. There is also a clash mark from the back of Lincoln's coat, but it is in bay 2 instead of bay 3 where it would normally be. This also indicates that the die was misaligned when they clashed. Both clash marks are shifted in the same direction and magnitude.
