So I went to a club meeting and during the auction picked up this dime that now I wish I had looked a little closer at it before I bid. I don't know why it was described as being rainbow toned but I thought I would post it to see what you all thought of it. It was near the last thing on the list and I got it in the heat of the moment.

And it was graded VF, which I don't understand. I would have graded it AF for Awful!

Well, I wasn't expecting this when I saw your title! I would question the person in your club who listed it as rainbow toning.....but it's to late now!

Hope you got it for under melt.

Maybe the guy who listed it is color blind.

I agree with you @John Skelton. Not a coin I'd like to own.

Personally, I would describe that as "toned." It doesn't count as "rainbow" unless there are at least 3 distinct colors visible, IMO. I could understand someone calling it "rainbow" if there were 2 colors, but not this.

Yeah, that thing is toast, hope you got it for melt. That isn't rainbow toning, that is basically terminal toning.

I wouldn't call it "terminal" until it's gone black, but yeah, the obverse is getting there. I have a couple of coins that have that kind of brown/russett toning going on that I like. This would not be one of them, if I owned this coin.

That's the kind of toning that a dime in a Whitman book for most of it's life looks like. Not very attractive at all.

I would call it fugly toned, I'm sure after buying it you agree. :D Fortunately it's a small ticket item. Just place it in your junk silver jar and move onward to another coin if you wish. Better luck next time! :D

Yeah, I think it's the worst $2.25 I ever spent. I may throw it into a future auction just to get rid of it. If I do what should I price it at?

Let me ask you this as a matter of learning. Does it look like a rainbow? I'm sure you answered no, so it's not a rainbow.

Somebody swallowed that dime and then fished it out of the toilet the next day, ugh.
