"The decision by the United States Mint to redesign the reverses of the American Eagle gold and silver coins to accommodate new anti-counterfeiting technology is one of the best things to happen in the hobby in a long time."

    Gotta agree! :D

I didn't know there was a counterfeiting problem with these.

People will do just about anything, including counterfeiting ASEs, to make a buck, especially in countries where the per capital income is peanuts.

It doesn't say what these anti-counterfeit measures are. Anybody got any ideas ?

My understanding was that it wasn't that profitable to make counterfeit coins as opposed to bills/currency. Only small-timers would have interest in making coin fakes since the ones who generally utilize them (collectors/numismatists) are very small compared to people who utilize a currency for everyday buys-and-purchases.

I am a collector and about 6 feet 1 inch in height. I don't consider myself small. :)

There probably isn't. I think it is just an excuse that the Mint is using to justify a price increase.

A small radio chip will be installed in the core of each ASE so the government can track them.

Almost everyone I know in Asia have a coffee can of counterfeit dollar size coins that they thought were genuine. It's a big business (Counterfeiting) and lots of folks get hurt financially. Counterfeit coins.jpg

If "They" have the technology to get radio signals in and out of a solid silver shell, "They" don't need to track us with chips, because "They" have repealed the laws of physics.

Oh, this is going to stop China right in its tracks. There will be no way to circumvent it. The poor Chinese, what will they ever do to replace their counterfeits??? Are they smart enough to fool us again??? :banghead::facepalm::hungover::cyclops::dead::shifty:

It is my understanding that the US Mint is going to use the same technology used by the Canadian Mint with their Privy mark.

If the U.S. Mint decides to use the Canadian technology, why bother changing the reverse design as it is part of the most beautiful coin in the world (so say many)? Why mess with a good thing? Considering the U.S. Mint's track record, it doesn't bode well for the outcome.

The majority of people not knowing is a large part of the problem. But to see just how big of a problem it really is, all ya gotta do is look. There's certainly no shortage of information about it.

It's even been talked about a lot here on the forum.

We will probably see the addition of an optically variable image (will show a different image depending on the viewing angle.) The image is made by how the light reflect off a series of engraved lines in the die. Of course if you can determine the shape of the lines, the counterfeiters can reproduce them. Canada, Mexico, Great Britain and Spain have all used this anti-counterfeiting feature and there have been counterfeits made of all of them. So far the optically variable images haven't been as good, and sometimes will only show one image. On the other hand some of the genuine coins that were made for circulation do not show the variable image well either.
