I wonder why this guy quit trying to make his own slab. My checking indicates that neither the prefix nor suffux of his number are correct. Anyone ever heard of a MS94 coin? Let alone PCGS grading the coin "ALTERED SURFACES". As an aside to this, does someone have a penchant against 1923-S's lately? And, no, I am not only looking for 1923-S's. http://cgi.ebay.com/1923-s-Altered-surface-pcgs_W0QQitemZ230256356946QQihZ013QQcategoryZ139803QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
2548 is the proper PCGS prefix for 1923-S business strike RD. Perhaps the suffix "94" is the one they use for "Altered Surfaces", since it didn't get a numeric grade.
Just to clarify..........It has not been graded by PCGS, seller is showing the "body bag" it came back in.
Yes, that's why my bid is pretty low, $2.26. i figured with shipping it would be about $4.00. I could use a filler and this might go cheap.
Actually, Kudos to the seller for being honest. So many shysters out there, it really stands out when you see a good guy fly straight.
2548 is a 1923-S RD which this is not. .94 - I have alway learned that this is the grade. MS94 escapes me. 03975865 is not a recognized number at PCGS I have not seen enough body bags to say that is what they do with them, but just calling this coin red tells me there is something fishy.
2548 is the first number for a 1923-S cent. It is followed by the number for a 23-S RD cent and then the number for a 23-S BN cent. Since the coin was not graded and therefor they did not assign it a color designation they just used the first number for a 23-S As others have mentioned 94 is the PCGS code for altered surfaces and they put that in in place of the grade that it never received. As for the final number not showing as valid, you can see bodybags coins if you search by invoice number but I do not believe you can look up bodybags by serial number. They just don't put them in the database. What really gets interesting is when they error in the encapsulation room and accidentally slab the coin with the bodybag label. It doesn't happen often but I have seen a few examples.
The coin has been whizzed. You can slightly see in one photo that the luster is all off which happens when the coin has been whizzed. A shame they couldn't of figured that out before they sent it to PCGS. That would also be why it is body bagged for altered surfaces.
