    Ok I REALLY hate to have to ask this question but I'm old and so are my eyes. So here it is the reverse on the ATB quarters the writing and date around the edge of the coins are they raised or sunk in. When I first look at them they look like they are sunk into the coin but after a second or two they look raised. Thanks for the help and please be gentle.

    Thanks for the help. At first that's how they look to me but for some reason after a couple of seconds they look raised and that's when I'm first starting to look at them it's not after I've been staring at coins for an hour or so. Thanks again.

    I'm an old man also. The eyes can play tricks on you. They have games on the internet where you stare at a photo and depending on what you focus on, the image changes. It happens to the young ones too.
    Sometimes I look at a photo of a coin on this site and the devices look incuse. I back up a little and then they look raised. (As they should be).

    This is unrelated to coins but is it just me or do you find yourself referring to 40 year old women as girls? I never thought I'd get to where I can't help but do that. I do make myself laugh at the things I do now that I'm getting up there in years.

    Incuse = recessed = sunken......same difference!

    If you use a microscope regularly to examine coins, you will notice that higher magnifications can make it difficult for you to determine if the lettering is raised or recessed. When you reduce the magnification, you gain better perspective.

    Women can be very fickle if they want to be.

    When I was a bartender, I found that most females who had recently turned 21 resented the fact that I asked for ID, but most women who are 25 or older love you for asking for ID.

    There's a song that brings the aging phenomenon into proper perspective. In this day and age, the use of the word, girl, though, could get a person into trouble. ;)

    How about the 25 year old cop who reminds you of a teenager? :)

    Ok I like that because I can relate. Anyone in their 20s looks like a teenager. I can't believe I've gotten to the age I've actually used the phrase "what's with kids these days". Man has time taken it's toll but I do look forward to being that crazy old dude that's always pushing those idiots over who insist on wearing their pants around their knees.

    I'm proud to say that even when I've worn a tool belt my crack has never once shown.
