The Official CoinTalk Grading Experiment 13

How good is CoinTalk compared to the TPGs? Let's find out! Over the next several months, I'll be posting a continuous stream of Guess the Grade threads. I will be using photos from the Heritage auction archives (please do not cheat!).

All you have to do is guess the grade! I will be attaching a poll to each thread. Please select the grade that you think best represents the coin (to avoid bias, please select your grade before viewing the rest of the thread).

Also feel free to post your opinions about the coin, and it would be most educational if you could explain why you chose the grade you did.

In order to give everyone time to respond, I'll reveal the grade Tuesday evening.

Around Christmas, I will tally up the results and see how we did. This thread is an offshoot of a recent thread where I compared CT grading to the TPG, seen here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-good-is-cointalk-at-grading.343417/

We're going to cover a wide range of material, and some of it may be out of your wheelhouse. However, if you are a confident grader, you should be able to accurately grade almost any coin.

Choice BU. I'm not into grade rarities on these, or the high prices. Lots and lots were saved.

 

I went MS67. The field Nick in front of Abe's forehead is about the only mark I can see. Beautiful!

 

I went 67.
Virtually mark free, with cool doubling in the nose area.
Another unfamiliar coin in high grade. (to me anyway)

 

I know life can interfere with these threads/hobbies, but i was having withdrawal symptoms.

67 from me (before I looked at any posts). I see no blemishes, and wouldn't be surprised to see a 68.

I spent some time with this, thought 67 right away, then started looking for answers to the question, "Why not 68?" There are plenty in the pops, after all. I couldn't come up with anything. No marks on the face. No marks on the shoulder. No spots. Fields very clean on both sides. Great luster and eye appeal. Has the look that actually makes me want to buy one. So I clicked 68.

 

I went 67 on this one which was just my gut feel after looking at it for about 3 seconds.

 

I’m at MS68. I owned several MS67s and none were that clean.

 

+1 on MS MS68

 

Closest we'll get to a copper in the grading experiment? I'll take it.

 

I've been avoiding copper because of the RD/RB/BN distinction. It adds too much complexity to the scoring, and the grading. However, I suppose I could just ignore the colors and key off the numerical grade. I'll consider adding some copper in the future.

 

Or choose an early copper that would eliminate the color designation and instead focus on wear vs weak strike. Honestly, I find those coins the toughest to grade.

 

I went 67 the mark in the field and the marks on the letter o of one my grade. Personally I find these very hard to grade something about the steel and plating

 

I went with MS 67 based on it being virtually mark free (only a few small ticks in the upper third).

The slightly older generation of holder prevented me from picking MS 68. I could see it sliding into a 68 holder in the last few years.

 

I think it wouldn't be too hard if the color designation was ignored.

 

My grade is solid 67. It is pushing 68 territory. Very clean and lustrous coin.

I’d bet it graded MS-68.
