My current coin project has been to fill up a Dansco 7070 type set album like this one http://mysite.verizon.net/w2up3/dansco_7070/type_set.htm I will probably fill up most of the first part of the album before even attempting the gold page. I just wanted to ask what the difficultly level and price would be for this without the gold page and with it. For the more common cheap coins I will definitely be getting nicest proof or uncirculated example I can find. For the expensive coins and older ones I can settle for a nice Fine piece. Thanks
Well money will obviously be a factor. That and the grades you go for. Most of those are pretty easily attainable in decent grades (say F12 or so). First time I've ever seen one actually. I think I do have at least one example of most of the coins (minus the gold). Many were bought on a whim just so I would have an example and the price was right. I also believe most of these series have at least one "common date" as it were. I'd probably go for a nice Classic Head large cent first then the early dollars. Good luck! clembo
I already have all the large cent types except the classic head =P, although my draped bust and matron head could both use an upgrade. Those early dollars are really going to be tough, I dont know much about them and I need all of them except the Peace and Morgan.
To fill it with the quality of coins shown , the price is out of my reach ,exspecially the early dollars , I'd say over 50 grand in MS .
I just showed that picture because it was the best example of the album i want that I can definitely. I definitely couldnt fill it with quality coins like that either. I could definitely deal with lower grades like Fine for those really expensive coins.
When I started my typeset I wanted coins that I could show people and give them a good idea of what they looked like way back when. Of course I also wanted coins that I could afford. I settled on XF as my minimum. I came close. Had to settle for VF in two cases. And only one Draped Bust (1806 Half Cent.) Nothing earlier. I just recently discovered that I missed one. SLQ's from 1925 to 1930 (Recessed Date.)
An excellent challenge; maybe if you take your time by the time you need the gold you can afford it. Also you can always do a type set without gold.
Yeh, that's what happened to me. Almost had the copper, nickel and silver coins completed before I even started thinking about gold. And, no, a Stella was never even considered. And some of the St. Gauden varieties got ignored too
Yes that was what I was planning on doing. Taking my time and buying the nicest coin I could afford on each type instead of buying everything at one time. I think it would be a nice challenge and by the time I finally finish it it would be something to really be proud of
Very cool Jonathon! I am currently embarking on the SAME project you are. Let me warn you, this project IS addictive. One thing I am learning is to just buy one coin at a time, but make sure it is a HIGH QUALITY one. I started with a VF minimum, but now am up to XF......so I have been upgrading all of my F-VF fillers. I am still no where near done. Also remember that about half the album can be filled very cheaply with high grade coins. That part will go by fast! It's when you get into the 19th century that you'll start cringing at the prices. Its so easy to comprimise and get low-grade, harshly cleaned, damaged coins, etc.....and I still do occasionally if I find a good looking coin at a good price....but the higher quality you can go, the better. Good luck! And please post pictures of additions to your album when you get them!! And yes, the owner of the coins in the site listed is going to be hard for anyone to be on par with.....
