Disappearing errors?

Due to vision issues, I was given a $3000 electric magnifier that really enlarges objects. Coins are still a bit of an issue with some details but it’s still an improvement.

sometimes I see what looks like possible doubling when looking at a coin that is flat on the table. I usually rotate the coins to see it from all directions but as I rotate it the doubling disappears.

I have always believed that what I saw was merely an illusion caused by either the light, angle or lousy vision. But I’ve always wondered if some doubling will appear when seen at some angles and not at others? Or will they always appear no matter how it is viewed?

It's best to view a coin laid on a flat surface from directly overhead, and with the lighting in a fixed position. If the suspected doubling disappears when you rotate the coin, then it is not likely true doubling.

wxcoin Getting no respect since I was a baby

It's tough getting old. I used to be able to pick up any coin and make out the date. Now I have to squint under bright like to make out the date. Sometimes I take a picture with my smartphone so I can enlarge it to see the date and coin details. I should have listened to my mother when I was a kid that certain behaviour was bad for my eyes.

You did see the word “given”, right? Coins weren’t one of the options....
Actually I was given 2 different models. I’m a member of a low vision support group and nobody else wanted them.

Yes, light, optics whether you are using Optical or Electronic magnifier has a lot to do with it. An electronic magnifier may digitize the image and use "sharpening" to enhance clarity. This sharpening, although good for verbage and such as on a book, makes 3 dimensional objects appear to have anomalies that are not there.

I have some pictures, using a Nikon D500 camera using manual focusing of a coin in a flip (thus it has the thin layer of plastic covering it) using brighter side flash based lighting that one would swear was either a really emphasized mechanical doubling or hub doubling. That is, until you inspect the coin and what you see in the photos does not exist at all.

I use 3 "cheap" cameras. One being on my phone. I can take a photo with my digital scope (especially newer coins) and it will look doubled yet use my little non powered scope and see nothing at all. It will look like 2 totally different coins. Whenever I see something I find interesting I always use all the tools to see if it shows on all of them. It kind of helps me in the process of elimination. I see posts here that are the result of bad cameras and lack of putting further energy into looking at the coin. If I posted every "first" picture I took, I'd be hated here even more.
