An 1804 half cent that i bought today. Liberty and the date are much clearer in real life i dont know why they didn't show up very well in the scan, it might be because of the 2x2 that its in. Also the scans were taken from the exact same angle but the reverse is rotated a little more than the observe so i think its a die rotation of some sort but i dont know if that increases the value. Anyway just tell me about what its worth and then i'll tell what i paid for it =P
Looks like plain 4 no stems. So I would say between $50 to $65. Assuming liberty and the date are bolder of course.
Jeez I paid $70 for it. I read the grading descriptions for the draped bust halves in the red book and it seemed like it was very good-8 to me because everything was clearly readable, it had some drapery visible and it had the full rims. The price listed in there was $80 for the VG-8 of the same coin and i know the red book is always a tad high so i figured $70 was a pretty decent deal.
Johnathon as long as your happy with what you paid for it , it shouldn't matter what me or anyone else says is agood price , it's a nice coin in the picture & like you said its a stronger strike in person . I know I'd like the coin as I yet have any draped bust coins in my type set . rzage
Yes I like the coin alot so i'm happy with it. Its awesome that you have a type set, i'm trying to get an 1800-date type set myself and the draped bust half is the first coin in the dansco album i want for a type set so i'm off to a good start. You should get a draped bust, I have that half and a large cent both with draped bust. Its definitely one of my favorite US coin designs.
First - I don't use the redbook. Sometimes the prices can be way off. I listed a range of numbers because I was not sure about the grade because I can not see all of Liberty. Second - I paid $55 dollars for my 1804 crosslet 4 no stems in VG8, but your coin looks nicer than mine (eye appeal). Third - I would have paid $70 dollars for that coin. If the liberty and date are as you said. The color of your coin is very nice to me. My software lists a VG8 at 78$ and I usually subtract from that number - like redbook prices. So I think you got a good deal, because you like the coin. If you notice I don't often play the what's it worth game. I don't mind responding, but I don't ask either. Mostly just because I like the coins I get and it may not be worth to others what I paid - but it was worth it to me. I have two threads that would be relevant here - one about a trade dollar. Where I mention how it is a gamble sometimes when I buy coins - read that post. Then in another post I have at 1830 O-122 bust half I just got - send me a PM on what you think I paid. It is graded AU-58 by NGC - use heritage and/or any other pricing grades you want. I will be busy for a while but I will respond. This is just me; but I am willing to pay my local dealer prices that I would not pay online. Why - because I get to see the eye appeal of a coin in person. And yes - even VG coins like this can look great to me. I got a 1808(AG-3) $39 large cent last week that I really like.
Alright thanks for all the help guys for a little while there i was feeling bad like i got a bad deal but now I can just enjoy the coin and not worry so much about the prices i paid. And i'll be sure to check out those posts you were talking about mark.
Don't obsess too much over the price/value of your coins. 10 years from now you'll probably forgotten exactly what you paid for the coin- but you'll still have this very cool coin in your collection. By then I'm sure she'll have lots more new friends to keep her company! Andy
