I do have the closed and open 1873...and for a good price! I certainly won't be buying any of the proof issues...
Yea, I was beginning to wonder about that. The 1873 Two Cent Piece is wicked expensive in all grades. Even if you find one in Good, it’s still going to be expensive because of the very low supply. The price is not that much lower than for one in say PR-63. I have never understood why that is, but it’s the way the market is structured.
Here's hoping I can get one as nice as yours for the same price! I've wanted one ever since I learned it's the first coin with the motto In God We Trust on it. Plus, it's likely one of my Civil War ancestors carried one in his pocket.
I spend alot of time searching and.I look for those coins that look great to me. If I even suspect that its been cleaned I pass. I'm drawn to the fine to very fine grades....sometimes even XF.
If you are talking about ancient coins, yes. If you are invovled with old U.S. coins, not as much. "Cleaning" or "work done" is more likely with copper coins because the metal from which they are made is reactive. It goes down a bit with silver, and most gold coins really should be left alone. Gold is a "noble medal" that does not react with very many agents.
That's a nice two center - see so many of them with the high "WE" rubbed off. I'm on the lookout for a good one myself so it's nice to see they're still out there.at a good price; provided one is patient.
