I'm looking into getting a nice quality (65 or higher) $10 Gold Certificate, 1928 or 1934. Have considered higher denominations but figure the cost is lower for a $10 GC. Anybody have any thoughts on particular years, Fed Districts, or other specifics to look for or avoid ? I've just started my research, but it seems a 64 $10 GC will run about $600....a 65 about $1,000...and 66's $1,500 or up. And I've seen prices above those by 20% or so, either someone paid up or a particular bill has some scarcity factor I wasn't aware of.
Federal Reserve Districts do not apply. I’ve seen some very attractive 1928 $10 GC’s in the XF-AU range for almost half of your budget. Look for examples with original paper quality and good eye appeal.
Yup, thanks JS. As I am probably only getting 1 bill, I am more inclined to pay up for higher quality. But I'm looking at anything PMG 50 or higher and could go lower in grade if it means getting 2 nice bills. Want to check out the auctions, LCS's, and maybe a coin show or two before I buy.
They are....and for some reason the condition of these bills seems much BETTER than the same grade for other types of bills/denominations. Not sure if it is creative lighting or what. Usually I can very easily tell the difference between Gem UNC or even AU graded bills...and stuff that is XF to VF. Seems the amount of 'warts' for the latter is much less. I'll do more research and report back.
GUESS THE GRADE: I won this gold certificate recently, guess the grade, no cheating by looking at other items up for auction or checking SNs !
Wonderful example Frank. Good margins and really nice eye appeal. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear 66 or 67 *PQ.
Great overall note, but my first question would have to be who graded it PCGS,PMG or another TPG, all have different standards as they look at Things differently.
Here,s some examples, to narrow down how PMG thinks, Here,s what a 67 Looks like, you note has excellent front centering however on the back It does push over substantially to the left and that,s going to determine The grade, so is good enough to be a 67 ? would say no 67,s usually Never have centering issues.
Though this isnt a PMG note and a PCGS one it shows what a 65 looks Like a good example of pushing almost out to the boarder.
So from a centering point of view, i think your note is best represented By this one, which is a 66EPQ, but if there are corner bumps or anything That you could feel, that a picture cant tell you 64EPQ, but again from A centering point of view 66EPQ
I'll post the answer later today on GTG ...... BTW, it appeears that off-center margins are not the "killer" for the TPG's that they are to many of us for eye appeal. I've seen dozens of recent auctions in months where good quality bills have horrible off-center margins and still graded MS low-60's. Conversely, AU 58's and AU 50's have much better margins and whatever flaws they have are much tougher to discern for the average investor or layman. Same thing with coins...AU 58's often look better than low-60's stuff. Clearly, the TPGs are biased to certain factors that the investing public is NOT. Though you do have market prices higher for the 60's than the AU 58's, as is expected (wonder if that will continue in the future).
That,s why there such an excellent value, i am a big believer in A/U notes There often more attractive as there faults are less noticeable, when it comes the Gem notes most everything comes down to margins i do have hundreds So its easy to compare, however grading even among the same company Is very subjective as they only spend a couple minutes on each note if that.
The dichotomay is so striking that I wonder what a grader or representative from the TPG's would say about giving the higher grade to the bills/coins that many of us say should be lower graded. Anybody ever heard what the TPGs say about this ? For coins, there must be something about the AU coins/bills that drives them lower in grade/price that the MS's/PMG 60's don't have. It just can't be Mint State vs. Circulated or About Circulated, can it...even if the AU is better looking ? Is crappy-looking Mint State better than well-kept AU ?
The first rule of Fight Club is You don’t talk about Fight Club. The first rule of Collecting is Buy the Note, not the Holder.
Choice About Unc 58 Often a note with a single fold that crosses the design. About Uncirculated 55 This grade is commonly assigned to a note that has one fold or two to three corner folds through the design. bout Uncirculated 53 A note with two vertical folds or a single horizontal fold. May also have signs of handling. About Uncirculated 50 The note has two heavier folds or light horizontal and vertical folds. The handling can be significant. This is straight from the mouth of PMG, so in essence a light fold Which has no real distraction has the potential to look 67 or better With great centering.
