also i just posted this on ebay. listed as the "skeleton face" lincoln wheat cent...ive never seen anything like this. its pretty cool looking
It's definitely odd, as it appears to have writing/numbers on the right side above the year. However I agree it is probably just some sort of damage. It looks like it may have been run over and crushed by something? Who knows.
When you put magnification on a coin you will start to see things. It's better not to do that because you will drive yourself nuts thinking there are things there. This is one of the main arguments we have with new collectors who don't understand the minting process and believe they see things.
You shouldn't post anything on ebay that isnt a legit mint error. In my opinion it is damaged. We frown upon that. First find out from us if you have a true mint error or not. You shouldn't decieve bidiots on ebay.
I did not see that this coin was listed or even promoted as an Error. Your comment seems to be unfounded.
@Christian buffington ...our forum consists of collectors and experts who have seen this type of wear/damage thousands of times. This is why we attempt, repeatedly to teach and inform new members about the coins they are finding by posting website links to help them learn and avoid thinking this kind of stuff is valuable. This skeleton-face coin, (no date), is an album hole-filler, to be kept until you find a better one, should not be valued above face value. You really need to remove this from ebay if you have not done so already. Otherwise you are deceiving people. Our forum is dedicated to accurate information. The 41 is vg8 and worth a nominal 5 cents every day of the week, and imo, not even worth putting into a flip. I returned 34 wheats in better condition back into circulation this past week as part of the Great American Coin Hunt. You should spend this one. Let the forum know if you need guidance to help you learn more...Spark
Time for a gentle reminder to all. From Coin Talk Rules: Note Rule 2. From Coin Talk Code of Honor (same page, bottom section): Note items 1 and 3. Item 3 is especially relevant here.
