I know, but wholly cow! What was that, 1890? Pretty tough life back then too, I'm sure.

    Hey, cut her some slack.

Victoria was a 71 year old widow when that coin was made in 1890.

She was quite beautiful when she was young.

Note the gold sovereign @Norman182 posted right afterwards, with her younger portrait.

I actually wasnt tryin to diss her. Im sure it WAS a.bitch living back then. Could you imagine?? I mean different for a queen.
But us commoners, well except for you lordmarcovan, we would have been hauling water, stackin firewood. I'm sure food wasnt all that plentiful. Cold you probably worked from dawn to dusk, even kids.
I freak kids out now, these days, by saying how tough it was almost 100 years ago. With WWI, WWII, the depression.
The queen would have grown up in the 1800s, which was tough, but still that was like 300 years after the dark ages, so it must have been markedly better right?
Didnt mean to turn this into a history lesson. That stuff just fascinates me.

The 1800s were a bit more than 300 years after the Dark Ages. More like 800+.

But yes, you're right. Times were very different. Even most poor people in 21st century Western society have luxuries that even kings and queens couldn't have dreamed of just a century or two ago.

I was raised on a dairy, farm, in my early years. My father also cut posts for fence an firewood was a must. I probably started dragging brush when I started walking. Outhouse, cream cans of water from a spring. It may have been a hard life, if so we didn't know it was a way of life. All in all I have a great work ethic, an your name still stands for the person you are.

@char64 Wow that's great to hear you say that, my friend. Im glad to see that there are still people out there that feel that way.
And a man's word and dignity is all he needs.

There are plenty of people like that in the world, and I daresay they're a silent majority. You just wouldn't know they're out there if you watch too much TV or delve too deeply into popular culture. (Not to mention politics.)

I wouldn't of wanted to be in like Egypt back when they were building pyramids now that, would of been the worst. I would have wanted to be the architect, or Cleopatra, or someone in waiting somewhere.
