I bought a small one years ago and used it for a digital deer camera enclosure. They were pretty nice back then. Knowing what they are, I decided to take a look at them again.

In short, the new cases are unbelievable. They always were indestructible. Really, they are practically unbreakable. They're dust proof and water proof. They have an automatic purge valve on them to release the air when you close it, so I'm guessing they're very nearly air tight. They have a rubber gasket that goes around the rim to seal them. They also come in 38 different sizes with foam inserts inside also. Temp specs on them are -10 to 220 degrees F.

I purchased a 1200 off ebay for storing Whitman folders in. It's the perfect size. I have 6 in it now with room enough for at least 2 or 3 more before they fit tight between the foam. With a little extra room for loose stuff. It was 47.00 shipped and these new ones are solid as a rock. The latches are really heavy duty. Pelican makes these cases for government agencies.

I'm going to in turn put my case in my fireproof safe. If anybody has never heard of them, I recommend you check them out. Just google Pelican cases or search for them on ebay.

Your best bet is to go to their website, pick the size you're looking for, then you know the model # and then search for that model # on ebay or where ever. I think these cases are worth every penny.

The only thing is, I have no idea what the foam inside is made of or if it possibly could be damaging to coins. You can get them without foam. I got mine with because it's really nice stuff. If I notice problems, I'll remove the foam.

Thought this might help some people worried about water or damage from humidity and what not.

    Few pics

Here's my 1200. Just came in this afternoon.

Here it is with six Whitman folders in it. The auto purge valve is under the handle:

There's a thin layer of foam on the bottom. Convaluted foam in the lid and the middle piece is a thick piece of their "pick-n-pluck" foam. It's already pre-cut so all you have to do is remove the squares out of it needed to fit the shape of whatever you're putting in it.

Here's the removed piece I took out so the folders would fit snug. Just have to remember to leave an extra row on one side so they fit snug:

Ok, well, I was too quick to mention about humidity. In the little booklet that came with it, they still recommend using a silica gel pack if used in a humid area.

How something can be water proof and dust proof but you still have to worry about humidity, I don't know. I don't know how the humidity could get in to be honest unless it was trapped from when you opened it.

    Would still recommend though.

Well, the problem is that you trap the humidity in. I thought about one of these cases for firearms storage, but not for coins...interesting. Pelican cases are one of those weird things where the item is so cool, that you just want one...then you'll figure out what to put in it later! ha ha :thumb:

    lol :D

You're right. That's a perfect explanation for them. Yeah, I figured that's the only way the humidity could get in, is from when you close it.

I'm starting a half dollar collection in Whitman folders, starting from present back to Barbers. And a buffalo nickel folder. I started worrying about them since they had no plastic over them in these folders. I'm not going to be putting MS66s in them but there will be many up to MS63s of various types in them.

Then the idea of a Pelican case hit me and they appear to be even better now, so I got one.
