Thanks! That is a really nice find you made! I have probably owned and sold many Matte Proofs in the past since I do not have the reference books for the diagnostics and lacked interest due to their normally high prices. I search for and CherryPick Error coins all the time and why that I never thought to CherryPick Matte Proof Cents, beats the dickens out of me! Besides, you can usually get a CherryPicked coin for a tenth or less of it's true value, as long as you don't have others aware of it as well. I really appreciate your and the other members contributions on Matte Proof Lincoln Cent diagnostics on the Collector's Universe! They are invaluable to me and a lot of others that just can't seem to squeeze the extra cash to purchase the reference books! Also, you really have some nice coins listed on eBay and there are several that I have on my Watch list. Thanks...Frank P.S. If you have your PM or email feature turned on in CT, I would like to send you one or the other in the future about other coins.
Man, great find!!! A neat early B-day present for ya I guess you can consider it, lol. Nice cherry. :thumb: :high5: Phoenix
Can anyone recommend the best reference book(s) on Matte Proof Lincoln Cents as well as Proof Cents from 1936 through 1942??? Thanks...Frank
I edited the Title of this Thread as it came up in many Google searches. Also, although I don't mind sharing with the C.T. members, I do not want the whole world knowing that I CherryPicked the coin off the 'Bay. I am still looking for a good reference book or books on Matte Proof Lincoln Cents and 1936 through 1942 Proof Cents! I am hoping that someone can recommend the best ones! Frank
Frank....If you were to buy a Lincoln book, your 1st one..... Id get a more generic title......you can find the Lange or the Wexler book on the bay if you look around....they have plenty of info on the proofs, a whole section really, as well as the whole series. Then, and only then would I specialize into a narrow subject like that. If you just collect the proofs, or have the other book or books already, ....
Jack, Between the web and the Reference Books that I already have, I have quite a few sources for most Lincoln Cents to include Varieties and Errors! However, I have nothing in the way of Books on the Die Markers and any other diagnostics for the Matte Proof Cents. I can live with a Book that is dedicated to just the MPL's but if there is/are one or more Reference Book(s) available on Lincoln Cents that includes the needed information on MPL's, then I would buy it or them. I am hoping that there is one that is considered the best that also includes pictures! Thanks...Frank
cohodk, No! I didn't have it long enough to send it off! I sold it within and few days of my previous last posting on this subject and the buyer had it authenticated by a TPG at the Coin Show in Dalton, Georgia. Frank
Brit, Nah! That is not my way! I Cherrypicked the coin off of eBay for a total of around $26 which included the shipping, Insurance and Delivery Confirmation. Since there is no reliable Price Guide (Publication, eBay or other Interent source) for a 1911 Matte Proof Lincoln Cent in PF-58 to know it's true value, I told a local Coin Dealer at our' local Coin Club meeting, that I would take $100 for it and he bought it. I know that I could have asked a lot more (say $200) but I got a good deal on it and I usually always pass the savings off to others, especially that I know and deal with! Because of this, I know that I can get a good deal from the same Coin Dealer, if he ever has something that I want or need. Frank
Thanks you all but that is just the way I conduct business most of the time! In that I mean, if I get something at a nice discount, I will pass the savings off to others and that is why they usually always come back to me for more coins. To be honest, if I had known how bad this Coin Dealers situation was and is at the time, I would have sold it to him for less! He is going through a really tough divorce where his wife stole and sold a lot of his' coins to support her drug habit. He has tried to borrow the money to pay her off and get rid of her once and for all but most lenders will not lend money on the coins he has left and he is mortgaged up to his butt on his' home. Frank
That was a very nice thing of you to do Frank, nice job. :thumb: There are the bad guys in coin collecting, but the good guys almost always shine through. Phoenix
