I saw this 78 S raw recently closed for over $200 Why did it sell for so much? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gorgeous-Toned-Morgan-Silver-Dollar-1878-S-San-Francisco/401882289435?hash=item5d920d151b%3Ag%3AlGEAAOSwNHBdAnRS&LH_Auction=1
Looks like a naturally toned AU. People sometimes go crazy over toning... especially when they don't know what they're doing.
Unless it looks different in hand, IMO it has no eye appeal. Some just get caught up in a bidding war.
looking at the bids, it says "private listing, bidder's identities protected." what does that mean? Looks like a setup for shilling, IMO.
I've seen this kind of toning in Morgans that have sat in an album for quite some time. Though this one is quite ugly imo.
It's amazing to me to really nice coins, around the same price, sit and sit and sit. And fugly coins somehow wind up in bidding frenzy. I'm sure the seller is happy!
A seller can set it up to be private so that there is no trace of who is bidding. It might make sense for some items (I’ve read it’s used on the “adult” rated items). In most cases, there is little need to use it and it does bring up questions of shill bidding (even if there isn’t any).
True. If I sold this coin showcasing high resolution, TrueView-like images, it would have sold for maybe $70 or less. I found this out by selling proof Ikes. Looking at completed auctions, proof Ikes that had blurry, far away images in the listings typically sold for more than the ones I offered. Baffling..... It seems there was once a time when excellent, professional photography would “win” you the most bids. It doesn’t appear to be the case anymore. Again, baffling...
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There may even be some sober woman out there that thinks I'm beautiful. Just kidding! Not even a drunk woman.
Wow!...first take: one ugly/no eye appeal coin. It may be natural toning but it looks like it is corroded!...Spark
