I've come across a few quarters that are like the 2 I'm including pictures of. They hach a flat gray color to them that isn't from wear and age. They all have been 2000 to 2017. These 2 are a 2000 P Maryland and a 2002 D Tennessee. I was wondering if it's a lamination error or a satin finish coin I've heard about but haven't seen even a picture of so I'm not sure. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it. Thanks everyone.
Satin finish quarters were made by the US Mint from 2005 through 2010 and sold only in Uncirculated Mint Sets. Just curious, what makes you believe these may be a lamination issue? I have seen quarters that resemble what you have called "improperly annealed planchet". I don't know enough about this to say if that's what you do or don't have. Check the replies by @Fred Weinberg and @Oldhoopster to this topic on this site: https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1022463/improperly-annealed-2019-w-quarter Post clearer photos and include some showing the edge of both coins.
Huh... I've found tons of those before. Didn't realize it was a process issue. Just assumed environmental and threw every single one back (even the ones in good condition). Guess I'll take a closer look at them next time.
It was an uneducated guess on my part I've only recently started looking for error coins that's why I try to get help when I don't know something and unfortunately being new there's a lot I don't know. I'll try to get better pictures next time and I didn't know I should include pictures of the edges I'll include them next time. I'm grateful for the help and support I'm definitely checking out the link you included as soon as I post this. Thanks again everyone.
Could it be toning? I have seen some modern quarters tone grey and black before. Have a photo of one somewhere that has a dark black/blue toning on it. Have to see if I can find it.
I've never seen a coin toned gray before but I've only liked the naturally toned coins. I have a few I've found but they're all pennies. The ones I've seen that are the most dramatic are silver coins but I haven't found a silver coin hunting rolls yet I'm thinking they've all been found.
Please don't mistake that comment for suggesting this is a satin finish. It, like the majority of coins you will find, are likely not satin finishes, but just toned or environmental damage.
I didn't think that's what you were saying. You were just saying you're going to look closer at some coins you didn't take more than a quick glance at. I was just hoping someone might have a picture of a satin finish coin. The only ones I've found are in plastic cases and there always a problem with glare so it's hard to tell exactly what they look like like.
No worries, I didn't think they were satin. I was referring to the forum link Thomas posted above my initial post which their opinions suggest a planchet issue. Thanks for double checking.
I found this on a previous Coin Talk thread. (April, 2019). Scroll down and there's a photo of a improperly annealed planchet. Scroll down to the quarter posted by @happy_collector. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/improperly-annealed-planchet.337364/ Here's a photo of another one with a comment by Fred Weinberg below the photos: https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1022463/improperly-annealed-2019-w-quarter
Wow So after reading that thread and the links in it, it is making me wonder about the quarter I found. I have never seen a coin tone quite like this before or since. That is just toning right?
You should ask @Fred Weinberg about this. He buys and sells error coins. His email address is Fred@FredWeinberg.com First you have to verify whether it is or is not a improperly annealed planchet.
How can I be sure if it is or not. I've checked out the links that you've included but I'm not positive one way or another.
IMO, the North Dakota quarter is not a mis-annealed planchet. ....the coloring isn't right at all. It's 'toned' with another coin or something laying over the 'brighter' area. And, from what I can see in the OP's coins, they're just dull. They are NOT satin finish strikes or issues.
Ok thanks for the knowledge. That's why I don't bother people directly like I've had others suggest before (this isn't the first time). Also I've decided to wait to post until I can afford a new USB camera and microscope. The one I'm using now is a cheap knock off. The coins are probably not mis-annealed as someone had suggested and the possibility of the satin finish was just an uneducated guess on my part however due to the poor picture quality it's obviously hard to tell but it's not a simple matter of them just being dull they have a flat gray color to them like a primer gray but it's not paint. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and help. By by and buy bonds.
