what is the ugliest design on a U.S. coin? I vote Susan B. Anthony Dollar. the reverse is nice, but I cannot stand that huge nose. stainless
The Barber coinage....dime, quarter, half. Never even liked them enough to buy any, even at a good price. Guy~
The Barber stuff is pretty uninspired, I'll agree. The cent never really was graced with a nice design ( except for Flying Eagle). The early Lincoln obverse of 1909 looks nice in MS red, by 1981 while still copper, it just looked totally different. The early nickels, where nothing great, the buffalo design was awesome, Jefferson can't live up to that. Roosy dime is hastily thrown together. Wash quarter is awful, esp. after the beautiful SL design. Franklin half is awful compared to the fantastic WL design. Kennedy is hastily done like Roosevelt. Ike is more of the same, but reverse is artistic. SBA is Brutal on the obverse side Sac is pretty decent Those designs of the early 20th century are like 60's rock, they will never be equaled. My opinions, of course !
Anything with a real person on them. Not that they're ugly, just very boring and dull. I much prefer Standing liberty, walking liberty, Saint-Gaudens Liberty or even flying eagle.
I agree, the SB Anthony beats them all for least attractive coin ever. I further agree that the reverse is not bad. My favorite design, the Buffalo nickel, of course ! IMHO, our designs went downhill rapidly as soon as actual individuals were depicted on the fronts. I am not too impressed by the presidential dollars, either. They remind me of the tokens we used to get at gas stations.
my votes are SBA, she just looks mean or mad Franklin half dollar Andrew Jackson dollar and of course the Wyoming quarter reverse
Hard choice, but I'd have to go with the 1991 Korean War commemorative silver dollar. It looks like they just picked the first design someone scribbled on a piece of paper and the obverse is ridiculously cluttered. The giant running up the mountain looks like he'd crush the cardboard cutouts of ships if he slipped... the reverse with the decapitated eagle next to the map of Korea is none too artistic either. I'd probably get booed if I admitted that in my opinion the worst design on a circulating US coin are the Barber dimes/quarters/ half dollars. I'm sorry but the androgynous figure wearing a smurf hat doesn't strike me as an especially appealing design. The ugly starved eagle on the back doesn't hep either. Wish they let Morgan design them instead (I've seen patterns of his that would have been much better designs for these). The Susan B. Anthony dollar I can make allowances for... No disrespect to Susan B. Anthony, she had a lot of accomplishments worthy of honor, but she wasn't the most photogenic that's for sure... However I rate the Barber obverse as worse because the designer of the SBA couldn't help what Susan B. Anthony looked like and had to keep to historical accuracy for better or worse. The Barber "woman" was a purely abstract figure that Barber could have made look however he wanted, and he still made it look like that, so that gets a lower score in my book. Besides the SBA had a beautiful reverse (albeit the same as the Eisenhower dollar) while the Barbers had a sickly scrawny looking eagle that could have stood being fed a little better if it was meant to convey a majestic presence. (Nineteenth century art style is no excuse either... the eagles on the Morgan dollars predated this and still managed to look more realistic and majestic and not like a 5 year old's doodling.)
