Recently on Heritage, I've seen several coins listed as......"Improperly cleaned UNC details MS60"

To me, the words "improperly cleaned" automatically make the coin at best AU58 as it would no longer be mint state.

I may be splitting too fine a hair, or more likely just unaware of this practice. Also, the prices paid for such listings reflect the condition. I've followed Heritage's auctions for the last year and have only recently seen these type of listings.

    Any other thoughts?

The only thing IMHO that makes a coin not mint state is wear, but I could be wrong.

    Phoenix

IMHO, you are completely right, Phoenix. That is ANACS shorthand they use for all such coins.

You're not splitting hairs, you are just misunderstanding the designation. They are in no way saying that the coin is MS, they are just saying that the coin has MS details but that it has been improperly cleaned.

What that designation means is that if the coin had not been improperly cleaned that it would be MS, but that it is not any longer MS. So they are agreeing with your opinion.
