Hi Imho, I worked in the restaurant business for over 20 years There was one female server who didn’t like American coins and would throw them away. Not spend! I said to her “give me all your American coins, I’ll keep them” I have tried to save every cent I ever received no matter what country! I love them all!! Out of all the coin rolls I received. I usually find 1 or two American coins in every 3-5 rolls. Always excited when I do find!! Finding a coin will bring you luck Spend a coin that you can chuck Keep the coin to make a buck Make a wish if you don’t give a ... !!Happy coin hunting!! @Kasia ,@paddyman98 ,@spirityoda ...
I collect Canada large cents. I am an American and I live on the other side of the planet, so to me, US coins are like "world coins" now. I also am working on a full set of Canada silver dollars, which are definitely worth collecting!
They're worth collecting, but not everyone is a collector. I think the main gripe is people bringing foreign coins into a country for the purpose of "saving money" by defrauding the people of the country they're coming to. There's a difference between accquiring coins to collect and using them in commerce.
I live approx. 150 miles from the Montana border , We always get American coins and treat them the same as Canadian coins. I collect both , but usually the majority that we see are only worth spending . To get my American collectables I buy from auctions in the US. I think both countries have lots to offer in collectable coins . I do not buy very much of new releases , and hunt mainly for pre 68 Canadian , and pre 65 US . Once you get back into the early 1900s or 1800s the coins have that magical feel about them. I wonder sometimes how many different people used the coin for various reasons , and how far the coin has travelled before ending up in my hands. Like I said in my other post we do not get the higher exchange rate on the US coins even if we have rolls of them. So best to keep and spend on a trip to your beautiful country , or just treat them as Canadian face value. Dillan
Nothing "wrong" with them, The OP just asked what others do. Every thread seems to have a cantankerous take in Cointalk, at times.
I have fun building a collection of Canadian coins, especially since over the last 30 years Canada has minted many circulating commemoratives. Over the years, it grown into a nice sized and interesting collection.
How ya doing finding 1920-30 cents. I live in buffalo ny. 5 min ride from canada but these cents are hard to find
When canadian dump their coins in the USA that sucks. When AMERICANSdump their coins in Canada thats called profit. Don't be nieve. A box of 500 dollers of canadian quarters worth 350 USA dollars.
It really depends on where you're located. I'm from Michigan, and we'd accept Canadian coins without a problem. We didn't have enough in circulation for it to be a real problem, but if you tried to pay exclusively with Canadian coins, or if you took an entire roll to a bank or something, you might get an earful. Otherwise, a random nickel, quarter, whatever, was no big deal. You know, with the exchange rate at 0.77 USD to 1 CAD, everything would be almost that much cheaper for you right now, anyway. Me too! I'm doing it as a sideline from my other collections. Basically, when I'm down to my last few bucks at a coin show, I'll go look for a couple more VF/XF large cents. I don't have an 1858 yet, but I've accumulated probably about 15 so far.
The 1920-30's are a real challenge. Always have been. Back in the 1970s & 1980s I found a number of George V & VIs. Last year I found a 1942 in a roll of USA pennies. I used to live in Broward County Florida and we had a lot of Canadians stay during the winters.
I personally love any kind of Canadian coins. I save every one. I got tubes devoted to them. I have a fascination with nickels and every time I get a Canadian nickel, I get super excited. That might be weird but I don't care, its a awesome looking coin. When I coin hunt nickels and come across one, I yell BEAVER! Just to piss the wife off, lol.
