Dumb luck: 1839-O Seated Liberty Dime

It appears his VF20 is a F-108 and mine is an F-108a, incorrectly attributed by PCGS.

Good finds. I'm a bit surprised at the severe price drop for that particular coin but, like I said, mid-vfish coins appear to be imbalanced currently for supply vs demand.

Don't get me wrong, your coin is awesome and a pick that would have also made my day...I just think the variety may not be as rare as initially thought.

As for F-108 vs F-108a, I don't know that there is much rarity difference but I will say that it's much easier to spot the later die state due to a super weak date and stars 1-3. I'm impressed at your find!

Wow a PCGS value guide of $135? How in the world did HA get such a huge price for it? Bids are usually spot on to low retail at HA. Maybe it had something to do with 2007 when $$$ were freely flowing. I wonder how much this would have gone for after 2008?

 

Because at least two bidders realized the rarity of the die variety. This wasn't a retail type of coin. In the same type of auction today I suspect that it would bring close to the same--maybe slightly (but not by much) less.
