I have recently started collecting the US State quarters, i was told these were to be released at 5 per year over a ten year period. My question being, were there only 50 states represented or were there 52 coins released covering all states.

The coin dealers here in Aus that I have asked (admittedly only a few) are not sure.

There are only 50 states in the US.
    BUT
There will be an additional year added to cover the 6 US Territories.

Hence total coins will be 56.

There are 50 US States thus 50 state quarters.

In 2009, United States Mint will produce six newly designed quarters in 2009 honoring the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories: the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Won't the territory coins have both P&D mints? Wouldn't there be 12 then? 62 total.

^^There will only be 6 new 'designs', one for each territory. Yes, there will be P & D mint marks, and, I would imagine, S mint marks, too. Also, these are considered a new series, not a part of the 'States' series.

    50 state quarters

There are a total of 50, 5 each year since since 1999. This is the last year for the 50 states but there are 6 territory coins coming out in 2009.

Sorry, I had my view set up funny and hadn't realized others responded to this question.

My math tells me there should be: 56- P's. 56-D's, 56-S clad proofs and 56-S silver proofs. That should be a total of 224 coins for a complete set. 200 coins for the state set and 24 for the territories . Correct me if I'm wrong. John
