found 1877TD in coin lot purchase, take a good look. looks suspect, has excellent reeded rim, no cast seam? look at the bead work around the rim, you be the judge if authentic, until i can weigh. thanks, ozarktravler
The circumstances relating to the finding of he coin SCREAM counterfeit, but when I enlarge the picture it looks genuine to me. Weight will be the telling factor, 27.22 grams is the magic weight. Ben
It appears genuine to me as well! Like Ben stated, the weight will be the telling factor. Also, try to measure the diameter as well which should be 38.1 millimeters or very close. By the way, can you provide a picture of the Reverse? Frank
I believe it to be a fake. The lines on the gown seem incorrect. On Liberty's right shoulder, the gown should spread back out as it flows over. I'd wager the eye on the eagle is a full blob of metal. On a real one, you should be able to see the indent of a pupil.
Reverse 1877cc Trade dollar , authentic? Fairly good close-up , take a look, judge if authentic? I will be home tommorow, weigh and post all data. If a fake, is darn good one! Nice smooth field, reeded edge, nice detail. Carson City or CC stands for C=china C=china, province? Scary isn't it? ozarktravler
I'm fairly certain the coin you pictured is counterfeit. I also suspect it will weigh correctly, as the counterfeits that are high caliber weigh within mint tolerances in my experience.
To me there appear to be notable differences in the design of the twig and arrow fletching at the eagle's feet. The design overall seems to be flat, in a way I cannot attribute to circulation wear.
I say its a fake. Notice on the reverse the positioning of the First T in states with the U in Unum. I guess maybe there could of been more than one die?
I would be very surprised if this wasn't a counterfeit. The draping of the gown just below the waist line on Liberty is completely different on the OP's example....the authentic has a wider shallower drape than the OP's. Also agree on the fletching on the arrows on the reverse. Also, the Mint mark is not quite the same as shown on the example, though that could be from different dies?
w/o even looking at a book to check the diagnostics, i am pretty much convinced this coin is fake. the overall appearance, even before i knew it was stamped "carson city", just looked suspect.
If I ran across this coin, I would automatically put it into the "too good to be true" category and assume it is counterfeit. But it's a good one.
I believe that it is a counterfeit as well but a good one! Why someone would say that it is a poor one is beyond me as I believe that the coin would fool even some seasoned Coin Collectors and Dealers! Some Coin Researchers and Dealers would pay a fair amount of money for the coin to have it as a reference. Frank
Another indicator this coin is counterfeit... Look at the reverse rim at 11:30 - above "TAT" in "STATES". See that raised knife edge funk ? Also... the look on the eagle's face is not right.
Yep, the beak appears to be more squared off in the front. The pattern in the wing feathers look "cris-crossed" also, instead of the fine detail in the original posted by Ben.
