I found this Half Dime in a pile of silver coins in a recent house clearance.

The 9 looks strange to me, checking the Red Book for 1849 there 3 varieties

    What you say ?

How about maybe just a 9 over a 4? Did they do things like that way back then?

Doesn’t look like any of the three varieties to me.

It doesn’t have the dash in the leg of the 9 or any remanence of a 6 behind the 9.

I only have the old Al Blythe book. I can't match the coin to the 9/8 or the 9/6.
I do see something going on with the 9. Interesting coin.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
So this is a normal 9 despite these bits under it.

Dave I do believe that there are more examples of the 49 repunched date that haven't been attributed. Let me look up the numbers of die pairs.
And mintage.....as yours is a repunched date not a die chip causing this this date is on my short list to check when ever I see a 49 in a dealers case.

    So the 49 mintage is 1,309,000 & 140,000 O mint
Die pairs unknown for Philly but in New Orleans O-6 & 12-R dies were used.
That's strange... the ratio of obv.to rev.
