I may have posted these before, but these are better pictures which do them justice. Also, they are just nice to look at. 1802: 1803:
The 1803 cent is a small date, large fraction variety, so it’s in the range S-257 to S-261. It can be easily identified as an S-261 because of the large arcing obverse die crack. See https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1803-1c-small-date-lg-frac-bn/1485 Don’t know about the 1802 cent though. I’ll leave it to someone else
Very nice coins. How does the doubling of the "S" of STATES come to be on the 1802 coin? Are the Dies for these coin not machine engraved?
This is an interesting variety which in fact shows 3 engraving errors on the reverse. You mentioned one of them ('S' first cut too low, then corrected), there are two more....it is assumed this was due to a rather unskilled engraver at the mint, daydreaming possibly. Anyway, he managed to put three errors into this reverse.
Daydreaming... or drunk? Lol There’s a second line at the fraction, which shouldn’t be there. It doesn’t look like your typical die crack... is this was the posters above called double fraction bar? It also seems the bottom part of the branches are missing, which seems to be known as stemless variety?
