You are very welcome. If you feel you really are attracted to possible errors, it would be a good investment to pick up either or both of the "Cherry Pickers Guide"-Vol 1 & 2. Both list all major varieties/errors of all the U.S. coins that are worth collecting. Most of us will recommend NOT picking up "Strike It Rich With Pocket Change" by Ken Potter as it is mostly a self serving book that tends to lead people to believe they might get rich by reading it. Not the case though. Good errors and varieties are hard to come by in every day pocket change. That's not to say it's impossible but not so likely. It takes a lot of time to get used to all the possibilities and also learning the Mints coin making process will go a long way to avoiding the bad from the good. If you like minor errors/varieties there's always die chips, die cracks, die clashes, minor doubled dies and many others that are not worth a lot but can be a lot of fun anyways. A good free site to learn on is www.doubleddie.com. A lot of reading there but also a great reference tool. There are others and I'm sure when you run into a problem most here will be very willing to help. But be ready to accept that many things that look like errors are really not.

  3. Exactly what I have done. I have ruled out any coatings as there is evidence to the contrary. I will figure it out.

Welcome to CT. Your coin has been damaged. It is not a cameo, it is not frosted, it is not what you think it is. If you sent this in to the experts they'll take your money and return it in what is known as a body bag. It's ungradable due to being damaged. If you have a local coin shop I suggest you take it there.

  5. Thank You very much. I got involved with crypto back in 2014. I accepted the fact that Satoshi Nakomoto indeed was alive and today, tomorrow anD Tuesday the world will recognize his true genius of his creation and his patience as even this day was planned! Unleashing a global revolution in money, finance and seizing back control of our financial destinies.

Troll alert. This has nothing to do with your junk 1980 cent. Just a way to get attention for your rant. Sober up in Indiana

If you are serious about becoming a collector, save this thread and come back in a year and re-read it, word for word, and I think you'll see that others here are telling you the truth. It is just a PMD cent. Nothing more.

About 10 years ago I got $50 bags of cents from my local bank to search through. The most common pre 1983 cent was 1980-D. The majority of those were nice red, mint or near mint state examples. I had always wondered why so many red 1980-D cents all of s sudden showed up in circulation; 30 years after their release.

OP has a FoolTube channel with the 1980 D cent. Using us to promote it. Also he has a FoolTube video about crypto. TROLL

And that's a shame as it just makes it harder and harder to know who to try and help. All it takes is one of us to verify something and then they can copy and paste the reply to justify something that it isn't.

Do you mean the '98-S Kennedy that is my avatar? If so, it was part of the 2-coin commemorative set with the RFK dollar.

I have two that are graded MS69 by PCGS, but a few years later, they changed their designation to SP. That's okay with me! I've seen fewer with the MS designation than the SP designation.

  15. IMG_8770.JPG I brought to 2 different coin dealers. They looked at under there own equipment abs stated they had no idea. One pointed out that based on the edge over the letters In God We it is too uniform to be deterioration. They both said keep it or send it off but costs money. I am still undecided. Here is the area they pointed out. Looks like pyramid pattern almost IMG_8770.JPG

The effect on the coin is from an acid working on the copper. That is why the damage is equal-symmetrical on each surface. Damaged. Jim

  18. I did exactly that. I put in 2X2 and just holding. I enjoy looking at and trying to uncover the mystery. I did find several other minor errors and a unusual one in my opinion. 1996 P With doubling at the face of Abe and small doubling of his ear lobe and on the reverse, The lettering at top is missing in large area, similar on what you see on several years? I searched the Cherry Pickers guide but did not see that error on it?

  19. Thanks Jim. It still looks very cool in the sunlight.

  20. Getting better at this I believe. Man the quality of coins sure went to hell here lately. The mint must have just given up. I like the strikes from the 50s. personally. Made a pretty darn good penny in that era IMO.

  21. Would this be considered a double ear? Also the chin and lip and back or reverse has lettering issues like die slipped? Snap_017.jpg
