I got a couple of low grade wheat cents from a coin shop once. More recently, I got a French franc from the 80s, and some Icelandic coin I don’t remember the exact denomination of, but is about the size of a quarter. I have heard of people finding ancient coins in circulation this century (a 4th century follis is about the size of a Lincoln cent), but I can’t verify that.
Not me, but a friend who in turn gave the coin to me. Bahrain, 5 fils, 1992: https//en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2737.html. How it got to far Western KY is beyond me.
When you go to a coin show do you over pay just to see if the seller gives you some strange change. I would.
I got a British 10 pence in change in Lansing Michigan, it passed for a quarter. The cashier probably thought it was Canadian because of the portrait of the queen.
That’s an important detail, because Canadian coins pass routinely in Michigan in small quantities. People from outside Michigan tend not to know that.
I've gotten several coins over the yrs , a copper dime, SMS quarter, once graded a MS65 1970 S penny to name a few.
Back in the 70's I got a silver 1915 Cuban 20 Centavos coin. It was a cute coin a little smaller than a Quarter and it had a star on it. I kept it as a pocket coin for a while and then lost the thing.
1938-D W-L 50c in change at a cafeteria in the early '60s. It was worth about $2.50 at the time, and I remember telling the people I had eaten with that it paid for my meal.
Two Buffalo Nickels with three K's stamped into them. I received them in change in 1975 in Leesville, Louisiana near Fort Polk. Discrimination was still very commonplace there at that time. I could tell you stories about what I saw. Disgusting. I don't have them anymore as my ex-wife stole my coin collection. Boy, you must be lucky if that is all you stole. Back in earlier times with my first wife, I had co-signed my safe deposit box with her. Un-none to me, she started seeing her high school boy friend. She started feathering her nest by telling our pastor crazy stories about me and got our daughters to lie about me. We had been married 26 years. Her high school sweetheart never married, but he sure told her how to clean me out. She went to our SDB, with gold, silver, and other good things, and cleaned it out. Next was our joint bank accounts and she changed the titles to her name..her boyfriend forged my name. She left me a 1991 Chevy Lumina on its last leg. I would see a friend from church and they would turn around to avoid seeing me. I trusted her with everything, but when she cleaned out our SDB, that was the end and found I couldn't do anything because I gave her a power of attorney ten years earlier, but she got thousands in coins and bullion. I finally got the last laugh. She married her boyfriend and he did to her what she did to me. All the time he had a young girlfriend. I married a now, lady and we are both retired state employees (she tried to get a lawyer to get part of my retirement and cover her medical. When she took it to court, the judge laughed at her.) I do miss my coins tho. Had to start from scratch. Best of luck.
