I guess I'm the "lberal" here. I voted AU-53. There is not much wear on this piece. some of the mushiness and the depression to the left of Ms. Liberty's are mint caused in my opinion. The left and right obverse fields are a differnet color, but the worst I might say about it is "market acceptable." It might just be a circulation rub. If you guys think you are going to get an EF-45 that looks like this, unless it's a very old holder, it's not going to happen. Most EF-45 graded coins are disappointing these days.
I assumed that if it was cleaned, that a TPG would obviously mark it "details," wouldn't that be the case?
Correct. My intent was that you would, in grading the coin, also decide whether it was a details coin or not. If details for cleaning, wheel marks, a scratch, or other impairment, you would select "Details" instead of a numerical grade.
For those who think that this coin has a lot of wear, you need to compare with the amount of detail on a Mint State and even a Proof example. This is the "With Arrows" type, but the basic artwork is from the same source. NGC graded this piece MS-64. And here is Proof example of the type. The design detail on this coins was not sharp. This was Robert Ball Hughes' "improvement" over the orginal work by Gobrecht which did have much sharper detail.
Yes, luster is a big factor. I thought that there was some in the protected areas between the stars. One of the problems with original surface coins in grading them is that the toning knocks down the luster. Years ago this coin would have been dipped or cleaned and sold as an AU or Unc.
Someone here educate me a little. I went with details because I thought the coin was cleaned. I based my opinion on the overall appearance of the coin compared to the toning between the O and the N on the reverse as well as inside the mint mark. Am I looking at that correctly? The coin shows good detail, the TPG seemed to get that part on the money in my opinion. So what gives? Was it cleaned or not? And if so, why did it not get a details grade?
The design detail on this coins was not sharp. This was Robert Ball Hughes' "improvement" over the orginal work by Gobrecht which did have much sharper detail. Gorgeous coin! What did that one grade?
