Is this toning?

Im Curious what would cause this?
The pictured are very close to what it looks like in hand

yes, toning.
Probably from being stored in an old brown coin envelope.

 

thanks Frank, That is exactly what it would be from, Before it was in my possession it sat in one of those envelopes for ages. I've never seen toning like this before.. only rainbow toning

Yup, take a nice white coin, put it in one of those envelopes, press between some other coins (causes some heat) and in a year so so-- presto!

 

Yeh, so much sulfur in the paper of those old envelopes that it quickly went right passed a nice rainbow toning straight to what you've got now.
