I simply don’t know what to make of this ‘79 Kennedy half dollar. Is there such a thing as an overall weak strike? If so, this certainly appears to be one to me. Both obverse and reverse. Plus the facial features, especially around the eyes, appear to be more than mere damage, but what do I know? So enlighten me, oh masters of coinage, what the heck IS this?
The US Mint sure got their money's worth out of the die that struck that half dollar. (Badly worn die).
This was my thought as well. Maybe there's die deterioration, too, but those surfaces look acid-edtched to me.
Looks like the die used to strike that Kennedy half should have been retired half a million coins ago.
If it was acid wouldn’t there be “Splotches” with uneven erosion? This appears pretty fairly spread across the entire coin.
