What do you all keep from each denomination when searching? Here's what I keep:

Cents: Coppers, Wheats, IHC, 2009 Lincoln Cents, Proofs, Canadians
Nickels: Pre 1964, War Nickels, Buffalo, V Nickels, Proofs, Canadian, 2009
    Dimes: Silver, Proofs, Canadian, 2009
Quarters: W Mint Marks, Bicentennial, Silver, Canadian, Proofs
    Halves: Silver, Proofs, NIFC, Canadian
    Dollars: Don't search these...

I don't keep coppers because there is no need to do so.. You can't sell it! Why do you keep them?

    Why the 2009 cents? o_O

I keep the coppers because I like to sort them by year and MM and I have the space, probably only do one box of cents per year.

And I like the designs of the 2009s :)

I'm thinking because it's Lincoln's Bicentennial coin. You don't (well I don't) see many of them in circulation. I think they've been hoarded.

I keep any curiosity I encounter in change. But, when I CRH, I keep the silver, NIFCs, proofs- same as you (not that I've encountered any 90% silver in a while).
I'm also still on the lookout for those West Point coins.

I don't really hunt through cent rolls, because I often get them as change.
I set aside better condition coppers or zincolns, S mints, and wheats, and the rest I put into a jar, thinking about exchanging them later.

I agree that the 2009s are hoarded. I saved a couple of rolls of new 2009 cents back in that year, and I haven't gotten any 2009 cents as change since then.

With currency, I try pull out any small head notes I encounter.

Looks more like what don't you keep. What else would you find in a search that is not on your list?

I keep all S mint marks / silvers (any coin)
W quarters (6 so far, ) any BU/AU half dollars.
Older BU/AU quarters that I don’t already have a few of.
Quit searching pennies and dimes. Too small. Eyes can’t take it. Any nickels with a buffalo on it. Still looking to find a war nickel.

Quarters and half’s are my favorite to search.

Also building a stock of IKES while they are still cheap and plentiful.

Clad Proof Kennedy's from my box searching. I clean them up, put them in 2x2's and give them to tellers who help me with my ordering and numismatic activities.

Outside of cents where I do keep a lot, the above doesn't turn into too much. I've got 2 coins from my current quarters box and kept 11 from my last halves box.

By keeping more from CRH it helps me stay in my coin budget for the month, and if needed I can always bring things back to the bank :)

Silver Ikes when I can find them, but ALL Ikes I can find @ FV. Got 4 IKES from the local 7/11 Today. A nice surprise. I did buy some circulated IKES from my LCS for $1.25 ea.

I keep anything that strikes my fancy, any errors I find and of course all silver.

  14. I only just started coin roll hunting, but enjoy it and plan to do more in the future. My first time doing it, I bought one box of pennies, two rolls of nickels, two rolls of quarters, and one roll of halves, for a total of $60. The bank teller had an attitude and was all like "what are these for? Why do you need them?" So hopefully next time I can find a better branch with more helpful tellers. The pennies were mostly new and uncirculated, but luckily a few rolls had some older stuff. Here is what I kept:

Pennies: one decent-grade 1953 WP, two well-worn 1959's, several other mostly well-circulated copper pennies from the '60s-'80s that I needed for my Lincoln cent collection, including I believe some '60s and '70s S mints. In the future, I'll keep the wheaties, steelies, and possibly some other interesting pennies, but I'm close to having most of the Lincoln Memorial dates and mints so I won't need to keep so many of them next time. Probably I'll keep some '59s and higher-grade '60s pennies as well. Don't know much about error pennies and not experienced in identifying them, so unless it's pretty obvious I could easily overlook it, but if noticed I'll probably keep it.

Nickels: Nothing. Was hoping to find lower mintage years, war nickels, or buffalos, but in two rolls, I knew the odds were slim. Those are what I plan to keep in the future, plus obviously anything older than buffalos if found.

Quarters: No silver but I did keep a few good-condition National Park quarters I need for my collection of those (plus the Guam territory quarter that I needed), nothing special. In the future I will probably only keep silver, W mints, and the few remaining national parks and territories I need.

Halves: Found and kept two 40%ers, a '67 and '69, both tarnished and worn so into the "junk" bag they go. Not bad for one roll. Also got two bicentennials, neither was an S mint so I didn't keep them. I plan on keeping all silver and S bicentennials, rare years, and probably any proofs and possibly BU halves especially if a good year.

No great finds, but good practice for the next time and helped me decide what to look for and keep in the future. The reason I got so many different denominations was just as sort of practice and to see what it was like.
